Juveniles dispersal

Water-dispersible granule formulation is considered to be the first commercial formulation enabling storage of S. carpocapsae for 6 months at 25°C at a concentration of over 300,000 infective juveniles per gram (Grewal 2000). When stored at... [Pg.361]

Striped bass, Morone saxatilis, juveniles develop in estuaries, notably Hudson River and Chesapeake Bay. Juveniles school during the day but disperse and feed at night. Schools provide the advantages of improved prey location, predator avoidance, and swimming hydrodynamics. How are the fish attracted to each other In Y-maze tests in the laboratory, juveniles are attracted to both... [Pg.130]

Juvenile hormones are lipophilic molecules and relatively insoluble in aqueous solutions. The solubility of JH I is approximately 3 x 10 2 mM in 0.2 M Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.5 [32] changes in pH, buffer and ionic strength had no effect on solubility. The addition of proteins such as bovine serum albumin (BSA) and immunoglobulin G increases the solubility of JH I for example, in 5% BSA, a 1 mM solution of JH I can be made. Sonication also increases the solublity of the hormone by producing stable, finely dispersed micelles. Juvenile hormone III is more hydrophilic than JH I in 5 mM Tris-HCl, pH 8.3, the solubility of JH III is greater than 2 x 1CH mM [33]. However, its limited solubility must be recognized when preparing solutions. [Pg.374]

Wolff, J.O, 1992. Parents suppress reproduction and stimulate dispersal in opposite-sex juvenile white-footed mice. Nature, 359 409-410. [Pg.84]

The preference of young females for family odors suggests that females should remain on their natal territories until they are mature and thus, safe from attack by unfamiliar males dispersal should only occur in mature individuals. Juveniles appear to remain closer to home than do adults as shown by their smaller home ranges than adults e.g., meadow voles Microtus pennsylvanicus Ostfeld Canham, 1995). Additionally, adult female house mice more readily enter neighboring territories than do juveniles (Hurst, 1987). [Pg.415]
