Analysis of the genetic control of enzymes in animal cells has heen enhanced in recent years hy the availability of mutants in strains of inbred mice which exhibit altered enzyme phenotypes. Although many of these mutants are simple structural variants, several apparently involve more complex mechanisms of expression. Among these are two independent genetic factors which control phenotypic features of the acid hydrolase, jS-glucuronidase.

Sample preparation Add 500 lL jS-glucuronidase (Boehringer Mannheim) to 5 mL urine, heat at 37 for 22 h, extract three times with 10 mL portions of ethyl acetate. Combine the extracts and evaporate to dryness, reconstitute the residue with 100 (aL MeOH, inject a 20 (aL ahquot. 

The mechanism of calcium bilirubinate stone formation by bacterial jS-glucuronidase has been proposed by iUaki et al. (Maki, 1966 Haki and Sato, 1966) as follows the enzyme hydrolyzes bilirubin glucuronide to yield free glucuronic acid and bilirubin, and calcium in bile at the carboxyl radical of liberated bilirubin forms calcium bilirubinate stone. 

J here were no significant differences in the serum level of d-glucuronidase between virgin rats without arterial disease and breeder rats with atherosclerosis. J emale breeders with athenxsclerosis showed an increase of jS-glucuronidase activity in the aortic arch and abdominal sections (Wexler and Judd, 1966).
