Journal entry

Once you begin the essay writing stage, your journal will become an invaluable tool. It can help you use the right tone, neither too casual nor too formal, so that your essay sounds like you. While rereading it, make note of the words you use, and what your voice sounds like when you write. Also make note of the ideas and topics that hold your interest. Sometimes you may not be aware of your feelings about something until you take the time to explore them. Use your journal entries to search for possible essay material. 

The balance you need to strike between formality and informality is simply the avoidance of one extreme or another. You are not writing to your best friend, nor are you writing an academic essay for a scholarly journal. Go back to the journal entries you wrote in Section One. These are written in the voice you want to use, with just the right level of formality. 

If you are worried your writing is too stiff, rewrite a few paragraphs as a mock journal entry, then compare them to your essay. What words or phrases need toning down ...

Choose one of the following topics. Then, write a journal entry for 15-20 minutes. If you need more space than is provided below, use the blank pages at the end of this book. 

In addition to case studies, a course journal has also been an effective tool. Students were asked to complete problems related to basic chemistry topics and internet resources in the journal. For example, end-of-chapter problems in the textbook12 were often assigned and completed in the journal. Students were also asked to record comments and questions related to course materials and to maintain a project log. Specifically, journal entries included responses to and analysis of internet resources, responses to and analysis of lecture material, critical responses to periodical articles and government documents, project ideas, and project progress including data, interviews, and event logs. The journals were collected at least one time during the quarter and at the end of the quarter. 

Before starting your research, make a journal entry describing what you think of the proposal. 

The next step is to assemble the journal entries under appropriate account headings in the ledger. The process of transferring the daily journal entries to the ledger is called posting. 

A typical example of a journal page is shown in Fig. 5-4. The date is indicated in the first two columns. An analysis of the account affected by the particular transaction is listed in the third column, with debits listed first and credits listed below and offset to the right. A brief description of the item is included if necessary. The amounts of the individual debit and credit entries are indicated in the last two columns, with debits always shown on the left. When the journal entry is posted in the ledger, the number of the ledger account or the page number is entered in the fourth column of the journal page. This column is usually designated by F for Folio. ... 

The creative journaling class will be cosponsored by Brookdale High School, and students who complete the class will be given the opportunity to publish one of their journal entries in Pulse, Brookdale s student literary magazine. The principle of double entry dates from the fifteenth century and is based on the premise that every transaction involves a giver and a receiver of value. Double entry requires that each transaction be entered into two accounts, the convention being that the account of the giver is credited and the account of the receiver is debited with the same amount of money, as noted in the journal. Eor convenience, each account is divided centrally, and the debit items are entered on the right-hand side. It is also usual to provide a cross-reference to the journal entry so that errors and omissions can be checked.

The origins of kava and its methods of dispersal across Oceania are not known. Kava usage itself is much older than any documented history of this part of the world and oral traditions do not seem to have brought forward relevant, reliable, or consistent accounts. It should be noted that at first contact with Europeans none of the island communities had an alphabet, and therefore a written language of their own. Furthermore, the journal entries that are available are very much from the Eurocentric point of view, especially of the explorers, travelers, and Christian missionaries. At the beginning of a course or of j ust one session, write a learning journal entry about what you expect and hope to get out of it, in particular noting any questions that you hope the course or session may answer. Write in sentence form rather than notes. At the end of the course or session go back to this piece of writing to check how your understanding has increased and whether your expectations have been met. 

Write a short account of the event as if you are in the experience what happened and what it felt like. You will need to write this as personal narrative, in the first person using I. Don t try to get everything exactly accurate at this point because you are writing as if you yourself are very close to the event and your feelings are also important. This account could well form a part of a learning journal entry.
