For pipelines in service in chemical plants, it is not usually convenient to place a radiation source inside the pipe and position it to irradiate each welded joint. The radioisotope source container maybe placed on the outer surface of the pipe. The radiation beams then pass through two pipe wall thicknesses to expose films placed diametrically opposite the radiation source, also on the outside of the pipe wall. Other methods, such as magnetic particle inspection of welds in steel pipe, or ultrasonic inspection of welds in pipes of all materials, supplement x-rays in many critical appHcations. The ultrasonic tests can often detect the thin, laminar discontinuities parallel to the pipe surface or the incomplete fusion discontinuities along the weld... [Pg.129]

Gypsum board paper is a special three-ply paper manufactured from repulped newspapers. The face paper or cream face has the ply against the core unsized so that the gypsum crystals can grow into it, as this is the principal form of bonding between the core and facers. The middle ply is sized and the outer ply is more heavily sized and treated to control paint absorption. For the completed gypsum board system to work, the joint treatment and paper must absorb paint at the same rate. [Pg.322]

Corrosion involving nonoxidizing acids can be highly sensitive to flow. Thus regions of high flow and turbulence are often more severely attacked than more quiescent regions. Weirs, lips, and other flow obstructions increase turbulence and thus corrosion. Pipe elbows, tees, and joints are frequently attacked. Rider and Amott were able to produce notable improvements in bond durability in comparison with simple abrasion pre-treatments. In some cases, the pretreatment improved joint durability to the level observed with the phosphoric acid anodizing process. The development of aluminum platelet structure in the outer film region combined with the hydrolytic stability of adhesive bonds made to the epoxy silane appear to be critical in developing the bond durability observed. XPS was particularly useful in determining the composition of fracture surfaces after failure as a function of boiling-water treatment time. A key feature of the treatment is that the adherend surface prepared in the boiling water be treated by the silane solution directly afterwards. Given the adherend is still wet before immersion in silane solution, the potential for atmospheric contamination is avoided. Type S is a floating head type. As the tubes heat up, they expand. As they expand, the floating head moves back and forth, but the pressure seal is not at the sliding joint. The pressure seal is at the fixed shell Joint in the outer head, which contains the pressure. The floating head floats free inside the pressure vessel as the tubes move. Types P and W are floating heads where the movement of the head effects the seal between either the shell-side or tube-side fluid and atmosphere. [Pg.57]

Traditional cold store construction was to build an insulated lining within a masonry shell. The outer skin would be erected in brick and concrete, and rendered as smooth as possible inside with cement plaster, to take the insulation. When the surface was dry, it would have several coats of bitumen applied as a vapour barrier and slabs of insulation material stuck to this with hot bitumen. This was normally carried out in two or more layers so that joints did not pass right through the insulant, but were staggered. The inner skin would be finished with cement plaster, reinforced with wire mesh. The usual insulant was slab cork. [Pg.178]

In this method the internal tube is in two pieces and there is less likelihood of making a joint with pinholes in it. The first step is the preparation of the internal tube a length of tubing is drawn off, the end blown out and polished smooth in the flame.
