Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Nanobiology). We also hope that this book attracts the pharmaceutical industry, who can utilize the knowledge of chromatin dynamics and its link to disease for the betterment of mankind. We thank all the authors for their outstanding contributions in preparing this book and also Ashok Reddy and Marie Johnson for helping in the processing of the manuscript and all the correspondence. [Pg.2]

In both papers Johnson speaks of the Mazatee practice of consuming an infusion of a plant known as hierba Muria for divination purposes. This is surely the plant that we have called hojas de Muria, leaves of the Virgin Mary, and that has lately been named Salvia divinomm Epling Jbtiva we suppose it is the pipiltzintzintli of Colonial Nahuatl. [Pg.299]

We can draw a second explanation for the apparent relative difficulty of time-moving metaphors from recent work on temporal reasoning by Schaeken, Johnson-Laird and d Ydewalle (in press). Because, as discussed above, the relative temporal location of an observer is not specified in the time-moving metaphor, the observer can occur as a third point anywhere on the timeline. For example, the statement John arrives ahead of Mary can produce the following three timelines ... [Pg.219]

Mary Johnson,45 a graduate of Newnham, became one of the first women researchers in the Cambridge Chemistry Laboratories. Born on 14 January 1895, Johnson was educated at Bede College School, Sunderland. She had actually wanted to read mathematics at Newnham when she entered in 1913, but inadequate preparation at school resulted in a change of plans and she took chemistry instead. When she completed the Part II of the Natural Science Tripos in 1917, she placed above all of the men in her year. [Pg.233]

The situation seemed to be reversed for the research laboratories. The Oxford Dyson-Perrins Research Laboratory had women researchers throughout the period of our study, while in the Cambridge Chemistry Research Laboratories there did not appear to be any mentors for women students for example, Mary Johnson published her research as sole author, while Delia Simpson undertook her research in the Physics Laboratory. For Cambridge, it was biochemistry which provided the supportive research atmosphere, as we show in Chap. 8. [Pg.252]

The URS needs to record any special requirements for searching. For example, do the users want to be able to search on partial strings Should searching on the name John retrieve John Smith, Edward John, and Mary Johnson, or only one of the possible subsets of this Do they want to be able to use wildcard characters Do they need to be able to search ranges between numerical values Do they want to be able to refine earlier searches by applying new criteria to a prior search result ... [Pg.753]

I wish to acknowledge Donavon Bryant for his persistence in preparing the gel samples for tensile and elongation testing and testing of same, as well as carrying out the T pin tests and producing the DSC curves. I also wish to thank Amy Johnson for her editorial assistance and Mary Anne Walker for her preparation of the final document. [Pg.236]

In the early belief that these reactions were completely stereospecific, we felt that the reaction of [Co(1-pn)2CI2]+ with carbonate could not give an optical inversion under any experimental conditions. This is, of course, not true, as was soon shown by the work of McReynolds (28) and Sister Mary Martinette Hagan (29). In a cobalt complex containing asymmetric ligands, one form is preferred, but both forms can and do exist. In the same belief, we hoped that stereospecific effects could be used in the resolution of racemic potential ligands. This does give partial resolution, as shown by the work of Johnson (30),... [Pg.8]
