Among the alkylbenzenes, the stereospecific effect of liquid crystals is most marked in the separation of m- and p-xylene. The more linear p-xylene exhibiting a greater retention than the m-isomer (similar retention observed on a- and (3-CD). The retention order on the liquid crystals, m-< p-different from that on common polar and nonpolar stationary phases (p-< m-< o-isomer). In contrast to liquid crystals, o-xy-lene exhibited the lowest retention on a-CD. 

The retention order of propyl- and isopropylbenzenes is the same on liquid crystals as on cyclodextrins. However, as can be seen from Table I, the difference in the relative retentions is exceptionally large on a-CD, which again illustrates the more pronounced stereospecific effects of cyclodextrins.

Stereospecific Effects. Early studies of Co (III) complexes of optically active propylenediamine 62, 65, 66), 1,2-cyclopentanediamine 28, 29, 30, 31), and 1,2-cyclohexanediamine 32) indicated that one did not get all combinations of +) and (—) ligand configurations with the two configurations of chelate rings in the tris complexes. A classic paper by Corey and Bailar (7) provided the basis of understanding stereospecific effects in chelate complexes through conformational analysis of the chelate rings. Dwyer (18j 58) obtained all of the mixed en-(—)pn complexes with Co(III). The energy differences proved consistent with predictions from the Corey-Bailar treatment. Contributions to the optical activity from the vicinal effect of the pn and from the spiral of the chelate rings have been studied and found to be additive (10). Conformational aspects of chelate rings have been reviewed recently (23).

In the early belief that these reactions were completely stereospecific, we felt that the reaction of [Co(1-pn)2CI2]+ with carbonate could not give an optical inversion under any experimental conditions. This is, of course, not true, as was soon shown by the work of McReynolds (28) and Sister Mary Martinette Hagan (29). In a cobalt complex containing asymmetric ligands, one form is preferred, but both forms can and do exist. In the same belief, we hoped that stereospecific effects could be used in the resolution of racemic potential ligands. This does give partial resolution, as shown by the work of Johnson (30),...
