Johnson 1984). It remained available in hospital pharmacies into the 1950s and preparations containing lithium could be obtained over the counter as late as the 1970s in the United Kingdom (Johnson 1984). 

The potentiometric technique involves the measurement of pH, which falls as acetic acid released by hydrolysis of the acetylated enzyme occurs however, this method lacks sensitivity (Michel 1949). The radioisotopic method uses tritiated acetylcholine as substrate. The method is highly sensitive but requires a scintillation counter (Winteringham and Disney 1964 Johnson and Russel 1975). The manometric method is based upon the release of carbon dioxide evolved from the action of the bicarbonate in the system with the acid formed by hydrolysis of the ester (Augustinsson 1948). 

The VCG auction is sometimes traduced for being counter-intuitive (see for example Johnson et al. [41]). One can construct examples where the revenue from the VCG auction can fall as the number of bidders increase. The second is that the VCG auction (in a procurement setting) can end up paying many times more for an asset than it is worth. The third is that it is vulnerable to false name bidding (see Yokoo et al. [69]), that is a single bidder submitting bids under many different identities. We want to take some time to counter the view that these are counter-intuitive or odd. First the examples. All will be in a procurement context. 

Serious drug-induced skin disorders have been reviewed in relation to 2370 cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (2.2% of 110023 suspected adverse reactions), of which 146 cases were possibly associated with over-the-counter drugs [1 ]. The outcomes were as follows 1373 recovered or improved, 85 did not recover, 84 had sequelae, 239 died, and the outcome was unknown in 589. The authors warned that although Stevens-Johnson syndrome is rare, it can occur with any medication. They recommended that when a rash and accompanying hyperthermia develop after the administration of a medication, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome is suspected, the medicine should be withdrawn and the patient should be promptly referred to a dermatologist. 

With the exception of photon counters in the visible and near infrared and background-limited detectors in the LWIR, additive electric circuit noise usually dominates the noise output from a detection system. The noise arises in the load resistance, R, of Fig. 2(b) as well as in the elements of the following amplifier. Sometimes called Johnson noise, after its discoverer in the late 1920s, the current fluctuation arises from the random thermal motion of electrons in the resistors and transistors in the circuit.
