Jean, Marcel

From 1924 to 1933, the editors of the Annales de Physique were Marcel Brillouin, Aime Cotton, and Jean Perrin and the editors of the Annales de Chimie were Charles Moureu, Georges Urbain, and Marcel Delepine. 

Odors affect human behavior more than we realize. They are now appreciated as important in human health and disease. Above all, the powerful role of learning is impressive. Odors become associated with pleasant and unpleasant experiences and can retain their hedonic value lifelong. This applies to food, to social and sexual relationships, and to environments such as houses, workplaces, or landscapes. Writers rather than scientists have described such anecdotes. In Remembrances of Things Past, Marcel Proust evoked a flood of childhood memories by the taste of a madeleine dipped in lime-blossom tea. Jean-Paul Sartre tells in his autobiography Les Mots how the halitosis of his grade-school teacher became to him the odor of authority. 

During his absence in the Germanic countries, an exhibition by the Section d Or group in Paris had been set for October, and it appears that Marcel Duchamp specifically returned to France in order to take part. While that conclusion is debatable, it is certain that soon after his return to Paris he took up once again his research activities in the Bibliotheque Ste. Genevieve. As shown by Jean Clair, Duchamp studied in this well stocked library a number of curious old books. Just how curious some of these titles... 

Reduced to their bare verbal bones, both terms just defined by Pemety prominently appear in one of Duchamp s last ready-mades (MD-196). The immediate function of this minimalist object avant la lettre), inscribed with the artist s monogram M. D., was to serve as a kind of metallic seal set upon the box containing the deluxe edition (32 authorized examples in all) of Robert Lebel s Sur Marcel Duchamp, published the next year to great acclaim. As executed by Duchamp in Paris during the summer of 1958, this is simplicity itself a deep blue, enameled metal (iron) plaque, measuring 15 X 20 cm., which bears an inscription, the kind once familiar to Parisians, neatly laid out in white letters (sans serif). This object, which Jean Clair calls a Ready-made imite, exactly simulates the kind of announcements one formerly saw, a century ago, posted on newly erected apartment buildings. The statement it bears is concise, to say the least ...
