Horikoshi (1995) showed areal extension of volcanic belts since middle Miocene in the Japanese Islands. He suggested that Hg and Sb mineralization in outer zone of Southwest Japan and north Hokkaido (Kitami district) related to forearc igneous activities in trench side. 8 S values become heavier across the Northeast Japan arc from the trench to the back-arc side. He thought that the changes in tectonic character from forearc to arc environment controlled the 8 S values. 

The amount of cross-talk between adjacent photodiodes which are formed on a substrate is reduced in JP-A-3133181 (Fujitsu Ltd, Japan, 06.06.91) by providing radiation absorbing regions in trenches formed in the substrate. 

Cross-talk may also be reduced by forming trenches between individual detectors. In JP-A-4267562 (NEC Corp., Japan, 24.09.92) and JP-A-4269869 (NEC Corp., Japan, 25.09.92) gate electrodes are also provided in the trenches.

The Japanese islands are essentially composed of a series of terranes that have been accreted to the continental margin of the Eurasian plate during the past 400 Myr. These terranes consist of trench-hlling terrigenous sediments with variable quantities of accreted oceanic crust that are intruded and partly overlain by the products of subsequent subduction-related volcanism. Within Japan the ages of the accreted complexes become younger from north to south and from west to east (Kimura et ai, 1994). However, relatively little is known about the trace element chemistry of these oceanic accreted terranes. 

Trenches are long, narrow, canyon-like structures, most often found adjacent to a continental margin. They occur much more commonly in the Pacific than in any of the other oceans. The deepest trench on Earth is the Marianas trench, which runs from the coast of Japan south and then west toward the Philippine Islands. Its deepest spot is 36,152 ft (11,022 m) below sea level and it runs a distance of about 1,580 mi (2,550 km). The longest trench is located along the coast of Peru and Chile. Its total length is 3,700 mi (5,900 km) and it has a maximum depth of 26,420 ft (8,055 m).

The deepest point in the oceans of the world is believed to be in the Marianas Trench, southeast of Japan there the depth is about 11,000 m. What is the pressure at that point ...
