The determination of chemical elements falls within the scope of the CRL for residues at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS), Rome [29]. By means of prob-ciency testing, the ISS-CRL constantly monitors the performance of the NRLs as regards the determination of trace elements. Recently, a cooperation was established with the IRMM to organize an IMEP ILC for NRLs on trace elements analysis in tuna bsh. As a follow-up of this cooperation specibc training activities for NRLs are scheduled to be jointly organized by the IRMM and the ISS-CRL.

The production of biological and environmental Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) is one of the main activities of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, Geel (Belgium) (1). The Reference Materials Unit was therefore requested by the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS), Rome (Italy) to perform the transformation of a batch of ca. 80 kg wet Antarctic coastal marine sediment, eollected in the Terra Nova Bay during the XI Italian Expedition to the Antarctic, into a sampled, dry and conservable powder to be certified for the content of a range of elements.

The strains which are used in the process of the present invention and are described as new strains of Claviceps paspali Stevens and Hall in this specification and the claims thereof have been filed at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita, Viale Regina Elena 299, Rome (Italy), and denominated by the marks F-140 F-S13/1 F-237 F-240. The American Type Culture Collection of Washington has assigned to the strains F/s 13/1, F/237, F/240 and F/140 oiClavicepspaspali MllCC numbers 13892, 13893,13894 and 13895, respectively.
