In this paper, I attempt to refine the predictable isotopic differences between collagen and carbonate that can be found in modem faunas from temperate and cold areas, using samples from Europe, Siberia and northwestern North America. Some of the results presented here have been published previously (Bocherens et a/. 1991a, 1991b, 1994, 1995a, 1995b, 1 6 Bocherens and Mariotti 1992 Fizet et al. 1995) but additional new data are reviewed as well in order to present a new synthesis. Yeom and Frei [96] showed that irradiation at 266 nm of TS-1 loaded with CO and CH3OH gas at 173 K gave methyl formate as the main product. The photoreaction was monitored in situ by FT-IR spectroscopy and was attributed to reduction of CO at LMCT-excited framework Ti centers (see Sect. 3.2) under concurrent oxidation of methanol. Infrared product analysis based on experiments with isotopically labeled molecules revealed that carbon monoxide is incorporated into the ester as a carbonyl moiety. The authors proposed that CO is photoreduced by transient Ti + to HCO radical in the primary redox step. This finding opens up the possibility for synthetic chemistry of carbon monoxide in transition metal materials by photoactivation of framework metal centers. [Pg.55]

As is implied by the name, a unimolecular reaction is one in which a single molecule of reactant decomposes or rearranges to give rise to product molecules. Ordinary thermal reactions can be modeled by a process which considers the reactant to be in thermal equilibrium with a transition state which then decomposes (rearranges) to give products. One can theoretically describe the process and its isotope effects using transition state theory. For unimolecular reactions, on the other hand, while there is still a transition state, it is not in thermal equilibrium with the reactant except for systems at high pressure. Consequently, a more elaborate theoretical framework is required to understand unimolecular reactions and their isotope effects. [Pg.427]
