Commercial LASs are complex mixtures of four individual LASs (C10-C13) with 20 possible positional isomers. Isomeric separation can be achieved by solvophobic association with SDS or host-guest interaction with cyclodextrins. Complete resolution of 19 isomers was achieved using 10 mM phosphate buffer (pH 6.8) containing 40 mM SDS and 30% acetonitrile [4]. LAS isomers in technical products were separated using a-cyclodextrin, but complete resolution of all isomers was not achieved [5]. 

Reduction of the metal dimer [CpMo(NO)l2]2 with Na/Hg in the presence of a variety of acyclic dienes generates the (diene)MoCp(NO) complexes in moderate to low isolated yield (equation 8)12,31,89. For the majority of diene ligands, complexes 60 are formed exclusively as the s-trans isomers as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In comparison, complexation of the 2,3-dimethyl-l,3-butadiene initially gives a separable mixture of the s-trans (60) and s-d.v-complex (61). The s-cis isomer isomerizes to the more thermodynamically stable s-trans isomer in solution (THF, 1/2 = 5 min C6H6, ti/2 = 24 h). 

Alkene isomerization is common during hydrosilylation. At partial conversion in the reaction of ethylcyclohexenes, the recovered olefin contained all possible isomers except vinylcyclohexane.426 Even in the transformation of the most reactive terminal alkenes, the recovered unreacted olefin is a mixture of isomers. Isomerization thus may prevent complete conversion of 1-alkenes. Similar doublebond migration is not observed in free-radical addition 428...

With the irradiation of UV, the trans-to-cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene proceeds, which is seen by a decrease in the absorption assigned to the trans isomer and a simultaneous increase in the absorption assigned to the cis isomer in the region 400 to 500 nm. The conversion to the cis isomer in the photostationary state is estimated to be about 25% from the change in the absorbance of the trans isomer, which serves as a measure of the cis content. The formed cis isomer isomerizes back to the trans isomer with the irradiation of visible light. 

A major feature of the azo group is its capability to isomerize this is the property used widely in photoresponsive organic thin films. The E-Z photoisomerization of azobenzene was detected by Flartley, who created the Z-form by irradiation of E-azobenzene. Generally, the E-forms of azo compounds are more stable than the Z-forms. The parent E-azobenzene is by ca. 50 kj moT the more thermodynamically stable isomer. Isomerization is the main photoreaction of most aromatic azo compounds. Other thermal- and photoreactions lose the competition with isomerization. 

You have already come across compounds which have different structures but the same molecular formula in our discussion of alkanes, alkenes and arenes. Such compounds are called isomers. Isomerism in alcohols is also discussed in Section 7.1.2 and isomerism in aldehydes and ketones is also discussed in Section 7.2.7.
