Although the conventional mass spectra of the five C- nitro derivatives of indazole are nearly identical, the corresponding metastable peak shapes associated with the loss of NO-can be used to differentiate the five isomers (790MS114). The protonation and ethylation occurring in a methane chemical ionization source have been studied for a variety of aromatic amines, including indazoles (80OMS144). As in solution (Section 4.04.2.1.3), the N-2 atom is the more basic and the more nucleophilic (Scheme 5).

If the pressure in the system is measured by an ionization gauge, the pumping speed SG of this gauge must be added to the pumping speed of the pump. In some cases it is necessary to take into account also the pumping speed Sw = —Fw w hich is due to the adsorption on the system walls and can even differentiate to some extent between the individual components. At the beginning of an experiment F0 = St and Fa0 = StP t/Pt. 

A number of analytical techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy,65-66 13C NMR,67,68 solid-state 13 C NMR,69 GPC or size exclusion chromatography (SEC),67-72 HPLC,73 mass spectrometric analysis,74 differential scanning calorimetry (DSC),67 75 76 and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA)77 78 have been utilized to characterize resole syntheses and crosslinking reactions. Packed-column supercritical fluid chromatography with a negative-ion atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometric detector has also been used to separate and characterize resoles resins.79 This section provides some examples of how these techniques are used in practical applications. 

The c.d. spectra are also available for a few oligosaccharides that contain N-acetylneuraminic acid. " These spectra depend on the intersaccharide linkages and the state of ionization of the carboxyl group, but no systematic scheme has yet been set up to derive configurational information from the c.d. spectra. Of particular interest is the c.d. spectrum of beef ganglioside, which fully differentiates the amide mr, amide tttt, and carboxylate nir c.d. bands.

The chemical compositions of the isolated Au SR clusters were investigated by mass spectrometry [15,16,18, 22,32-35]. TEM was used to confirm that the species detected by the mass spectrometer represents the clusters in the sample. Figure 3a is a schematic representation of the top view of the mass spectrometer, which consists of five stages of differentially pumped vacuum chambers. The apparatus accommodates two t5 pes of ion sources, electrospray ionization (ESI) and laser-desorption ionization (EDI), and a time-of-flight (TOE) mass spectrometer with a reflectron. Details of the apparatus and the measurement protocols are described below.
