You have already had considerable experience with carbanionic compounds and their applications in synthetic organic chemistry The first was acetyhde ion m Chapter 9 followed m Chapter 14 by organometallic compounds—Grignard reagents for example—that act as sources of negatively polarized carbon In Chapter 18 you learned that enolate ions—reactive intermediates generated from aldehydes and ketones—are nucleophilic and that this property can be used to advantage as a method for carbon-carbon bond formation... 

The isotope patterns for two simple organometallic compounds in the molecular ion region (a) dimethylmercury and (b) dimethylplatinum. The seven isotopes of mercury show clearly and appear quite different from the six isotopes of platinum. Since there are only two carbon atoms, the contribution from C is negligible. 

There are several mechanisms by which net nucleophilic aromatic substitution can occur. In this section we will discuss the addition-elimination mechanism and the elimination-addition mechanism. Substitutions via organometallic intermediates and via aryl diazo-nium ions will be considered in Chapter 11 of Part B. 

Precipitation is often applied to the removal of most metals from wastewater including zinc, cadmium, chromium, copper, fluoride, lead, manganese, and mercury. Also, certain anionic species can be removed by precipitation, such as phosphate, sulfate, and fluoride. Note that in some cases, organic compounds may form organometallic complexes with metals, which could inhibit precipitation. Cyanide and other ions in the wastewater may also complex with metals, making treatment by precipitation less efficient. A cutaway view of a rapid sand filter that is most often used in a municipal treatment plant is illustrated in Figure 4. The design features of this filter have been relied upon for more than 60 years in municipal applications. 

House investigated the role of cuprous ions in the conjugate addition of organometallic reagents. He found that the catalytic effect can be explained by the intervention of a methyl copper derivative, which reacts rapidly with the carbon-carbon double bonds of the conjugated system.
