In a multiple DBMS approach, this table might be split into two parts with registry number and structure stored in the CDBMS, and registry number and inventory stored separately in the general DBMS. Queries on this data would require two subqueries, one for each DBMS, followed by a data merging step.

If a chemical process requires the concentrated form of the material, it may be feasible to store a more dilute form, and to concentrate the material by distillation or some other technique in the plant prior to introduction to the process. Another reason to keep inventories low is the potential for storage problems. Coal in storage must be carefully handled. Improperly stored coal can oxidize (weather), causing a loss of heat content. Inventory Problem.—In an inventory problem one essentially has a stock of goods that is held for demand by customers. Under various assumptions on costs, supply and demand, and even competition, it is desired to maintain a size of inventory that optimizes profits over a period of time.
