This reluctance of native healers to reveal their secrets is encountered in other areas of the world, as Alex Shoumatoff reported in The Rivers Amazon. Maybe this protectionism is similar to the behavior of modem physicians (MD.s), who resent any invasion of their turf. And, as Swerdlow notes, this kind of vagueness turns off pharmaceutical companies from investing money in the search. (Not to mention that plant-derived substances may not be patentable, and the host countries in many instances now claim the rights. They too have awakened to some of the advantages of capitalism.) Nevertheless, Swerdlow s foray and subsequent forays among native healers spurred him to further explore the possibilities of plant-derived medicines, and inspired him to write the book.

Thus, if the old book shows its age, it is primarily in the choice of symbols and abbreviations that antedate the current recommendations of lUPAC. Of course, this does not mean that nothing has happened in chemical kinetics since 1968. Enormous advances have been made in the past 20 years in the kinetics of elementary steps (Chapter 2), especially from the viewpoint of the detailed manner by which they take place from selected energy states of reactants to determined energy states of products.
