Urography intravenous

The use of intravenous urography has been in decline for some years with the advent of high-quality real-time ultrasonography (SEDA-20, 417). 

Urinalysis after intravenous urography can give misleading results. Increased specific gravity, false positive tests for protein (with the sulfosalicylic acid and nitric acid ring methods, but not the bromophenyl dye test), and the presence of needle-like crystals have been reported. Pseudo-albuminuria can occur with a false-positive sulfosalicylic acid test (319).

There is a large variety of clinical manifestations related to the side effects of contrast media (Ansell 1970 Epstein 1977 Till et al. 1978 Witten 1975). The incidence and the clinical type vary considerably with different types of chemicals and also with the route of administration. For instance, Epstein (1977) reported an overall incidence of 5% of adverse reactions on analysis of 32,000 intravenous urographies. However, the incidence increases to 13% for patients known to have previously developed adverse reactions to iodine and 20% in the case of previous side effects of contrast media. The extreme limits of adverse effects in large, unselected groups of patients is reported to be 3%-8.5% (Ansell 1970 Witten 1966 Witten 1975). 

In recent years, concepts and techniques pertaining to CT urography (CTU) and MR urography (MRU) have been evolving. As the technology continues to improve, CTU and MRU will combine CT and MRI with the ultimate diagnostic capabilities of intravenous urography.
