Internet routing

Environmental information is available extensively on the free Internet. Two main reasons aeeount for this. First, the freedom of environmental information law and, secondly, the fact that many environmental databases which used to be available only commercially are now accessible on the free Internet. This section focuses on environmental information which is available free of charge on the Internet. Three main paths are distinguished for searching environmental information effectively. When the project was started in 2002, European exposure factor data were scattered within numerous national and international institutions. ExpoFacts has created no new data, but instead compiled the existing data into one Internet database, where it can be easily found, screened, and downloaded from. Data were collected from the EU countries, candidate countries to EU, and EFTA countries. As a result, the ExpoFacts database contains data from 30 European countries. In addition to the population time use patterns and exposure route information, e.g., dietary statistics, the database contains socio-demographic and physiologic information to enable database use as a tool for population-wide exposure modeling and risk assessment. 

There are more marketing approaches to the customer than ever before. Because the market is new, it is well set to embrace new routes such as the internet, farmers markets and buying co-operatives. The arrival of the internet has opened up an enormous opportunity for organic farmers to market their products directly to customers, and it has enabled consumers struggling to find organic meat to locate a suitable supplier and buy direct. Search engines such as Yahoo.com can allow potential customers who key in words such as organic and meat to access any number of e-commerce sites with which to do business. 

The drugs themselves can be totally synthetic, and indeed, precursor chemicals such as benzyl methyl ketone are subject to separate controls and monitoring. Alternatively, they may be semi-synthetic, where natural products have been used as the starting materials for the synthesis. There are a number of synthetic routes described in the literature [1, 2], in addition to a plethora of Internet sites where recipes are described. 

Data are transmitted through the Internet by using TCP/IP communication protocols. A specific function of TCP/IP protocols is so-called packet switching. When a data file is sent through the Internet it is not sent in one pieee. Instead, the file is broken into packets that can be routed separately through the Internet, a proeess that is ealled packet switching. This is illustrated in Figure 39.3. 

We recognize that the Internet, as computer system, cannot be validated because its configuration is dynamic. For example, when a record is transmitted from source to destination computers, various portions (or packets) of the record may travel along different paths, a route that neither sender nor recipient can define or know ahead of time. Of course, before being able to use all the resources that the Internet has to offer, one needs to actually make a physical connection between one s own computer and the information superhighway. For purposes of this discussion, the elements of this coimection have been separated into two discrete parts the actual, physical coimection (meaning the wire miming from one s computer to the Internet backbone) and the service provider, who handles issues of routing and content once connected. Keep in mind that, in practice, these are not necessarily treated as two separate parts—for instance, one s service provider may also be the same company that will run cables or fibers right into one s home or office. 

Given that identification numbers provide a convenient way to transmit information easily and accurately, they are recorded onto documents, typed or scanned into computers, sent via the Internet, or transmitted in some other fashion millions of times a day. Banks routinely transfer money electronically by using routing and account numbers, and consumers frequently complete sales with credit card numbers. Since these types of transactions occur so frequently, errors are bound to happen. For example, the number 12345 could be transmitted and incorrectly recorded as 12346 or as 123M. A bank would not want to transfer money into the wrong bank account, and consumers and retailers do not want charges billed to the wrong credit card account.
