Oersted was named a fellow of several learned societies, presented with medals, and awarded cash prizes. At home, Oersted became Denmark s leading citizen. He continued his research, but as an international figure he traveled extensively, became fluent in many languages, and met with the leading scientists of the time. He gave frequent public lectures and became a director of the Royal Polytechnic Institute of Copenhagen. He also had a lifelong interest in literature and, in 1829, he founded a literary journal to which he frequently contributed articles about sci-... [Pg.897]

The hydrogen atom, containing a single electron, has played a major role in the development of models of electronic structure. In 1913 Niels Bohr (1885-1962), a Danish physicist, offered a theoretical explanation of the atomic spectrum of hydrogen. His model was based largely on classical mechanics. In 1922 this model earned him the Nobel Prize in physics. By that time, Bohr had become director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen. There he helped develop the new discipline of quantum mechanics, used by other scientists to construct a more sophisticated model for the hydrogen atom. [Pg.137]

The successful chairmanship and the apparent qualities of personnel management landed several offers of deanships in Yngve s lap. He decided, to my delight, to remain a dedicated scientist. Administrative obligations remained, he assumed the role of Director of the Quantum Theory Project in 1983 and led this rather informal association of faculty members from Chemistry and Physics to be established, in 1987, as the "Institute for Theory and Computation in Molecular and Materials Sciences" with a well defined position in the University system. This was another demonstration of the ability to create coherence and commitment amongst a body of strong minded people with diverse interests. It is a consequence that Florida remains a world renowned hub of quantum chemistry activities. [Pg.12]
