When Richard arrived at the receiving area he picked up the pallet of dry wall. As he was hfting it he heard a bang. Richard set the load down and after inspecting the fork he found one of the fork pins was snapped in half He found a replacement in the tool box. Richard was just thankful that the steering mechanism hadn t gone out on him. From previous inspections he knew the ball joint was starting to wear. Richard lifted the load and was just about to leave. 

Industrial trucks shall meet the following requirements The capacity will be posted on the vehicle so it is clearly visible to the operator. No modifications should be made to the equipment without the consent of the manufacturer. Protection such as overhead guards or safety platforms should be secured to the lifting mechanism. Finally, all industrial trucks must meet all the ANSI standards for design, construction, stability, inspection, testing, maintenance, and operation. 

The purpose of the examination is to ascertain whether the lift can continue to be used with safety up to its designated operating iimit for the period of time until the next inspection and, if not, to specify any repairs, renewals or adjustments necessary to ensure this. The person making the examination must have regard to all factors affecting safety and take into consideration both the mechanical and electrical components of the installation. 

In other cases, routae inspections and checking of equipment should be implemented. This should be by the operators or supervisors and should be part of the operating procedures for the equipment. Typical of items checked could be load limiters and indicators on cranes, tyre pressures on mobile lifting equipment, hoist limit switches on the hoisting mechanism of overhead fravelling cranes, the adjustment of brakes on hoists, etc. The inspection may identify otiier defects which could include ... 

Operators must also review the rigging to ensure slings and other devices are sufficient to support the load and attach it to the hook. During the lift, safe clearances must be maintained and workers must stay dear of the loads. Periodic inspections of all operating mechanisms, hydraulic lines, hooks, ropes, chains, and related electrical apparatus must be carefully documented. Any damaged or defective equipment must be immediately tagged and removed from service. All repairs and adjustments to this equipment must be performed by well-trained and certified workers. 

If a mechanical vertical lift is used, it must be properly inspected and certified according to local codes. A no-riders rule must exist for this device. Proper security railings, alarms, power disconnects, warning signs such as that in Figure 4-8, and the ability to lockout the lift are necessary.
