Vision, insect

These pterins occupy a special position biosynthetically, because their side chain at the 6-position means that they cannot be derived from the FA pterins by rimple hydrolysis and oxidation reactions and physiologically, because of their relation to photosynthesis, insect vision, and the growth of a protozoan. [Pg.33]

Olfaction is not necessary in other lizard species. For instance, the ground-skink, Scincella lateralis, which feeds on insects in the ground litter, does not require chemical cues to attack prey (Nicoletto, 1985). Presumahly, vision alone suffices for this purpose. [Pg.348]

This coevolution between plants and animals for their mutual benefit has not only resulted in the complex and individual fragrances that they produce but in the wonderful color and structure of flowers themselves. We do not know whether insects such as bees can smell precisely the same range of materials as ourselves or whether their olfactory world differs from ours in the same way as does their vision. Bees are able to "see" ultraviolet, and the patterns of flowers that guide the bee toward the source of food appear quite different to the bee than they do to us. But, since we are able to smell most constituents of essential oils, it is probably fair to assume that our range of smell is quite similar. Perhaps bees have a much clearer idea of the smell of benzyl alcohol, which occurs in many flowers, than do most perfumers. How it would actually smell to them we cannot imagine any more than we can imagine the color of ultraviolet. [Pg.75]

EU member countries, such as the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, have their own specifications. The European Spice Association (ESA) has a set of quality minima for herbs and spices , but has yet to finalize the cleanliness specification standards for spices and spice products. Extraneous matter and foreign matter should not exceed 1 and 2%, respectively, and should be free from live and/or dead insects, insect fragments and rodent contamination visible to the naked eye (corrected if necessary for abnormal vision). Salmonella must be absent in (at least) 25 g of material yeast and mould, 105/g (target), absolute maximum 106/g E. coli, 102/g (target), absolute maximum 103/g (Table 6.11). [Pg.115]

I listened to the buzzing of insects in the preternatural quiet that seemed suddenly to have descended on the place. An intense humming filled my head, an insect s buzz magnified a hundred times. The bejew-eled visions were gone and now there was only a crisp darkness behind my eyes. The mysterious hum elicited the palpable sense of a presence nearby, a presence that wished to remain hidden but was clearly as aware of me, as I was of it. In retrospect, I call this phase of the journey the Portal, perhaps the portal to the land of the dead or what Terence McKenna called an ecology of souls. I wondered if I was to pass beyond the Portal that day. [Pg.243]

Frightening Visions The creature sees fearful images everywhere. They may see monsters, hordes of insects, ghosts, or the things they most fear. Treat as Frightened for game purposes. [Pg.8]

UV vision has been documented in a variety of terrestrial organisms including insects, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals [53-55]. It is therefore not surprising that many aquatic organisms also perceive light in the UV spectrum. Most UV photoreceptors in aquatic organisms have been described in fish species however, UV photoreceptors have also been reported in bacteria and algae as well as some species of protozoans, annelids, cnidarians, and crustaceans (Table 1). [Pg.466]

The compound eye of certain insects is also capable of colour vision. [Pg.179]
