Input analysis, process data definition

Fundamental to the basis for the calculation of the roaster operational data is a full mineralogical analysis and a complete definition of the chemical and physical properties of each concentrate. Data available from such analyses form the basis for an accurate mass and energy balance. The model then calculates all process ii ut data required for any prescribed output product requirements. Consistent calcine quality can be achiev only if the concentrates are properly assessed and predictions and consequent adjustments are made to the roaster input parameters. 

The aim of project evaluation is to use the available data to provide information which will assist decision making on the future of the project. Use of sensitivity analysis and risk analysis techniques point up areas where uncertainty in the input data has greatest effect and indicates the effects of these uncertainties on the project outcome. Such evaluation does not eliminate the need for skilled judgement in the management team nor does it necessarily make the decision process any easier. However, it does ensure that a complete view of the project is available and makes clear the need for definitive company policy on risk and profitability criteria. 

The International Standard Organization (ISO 14040) [26] breaks the LCA framework into four main stages (1) Goal and scope definition of the study. This stage clarifies the purposes of carrying the study while the assumptions and system boundaries are described clearly. (2) Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) analysis. LCI involves data collection and calculation procedures to quantify relevant inputs and outputs of the entire system defined within the system boundaries. (3) Life cycle impact assessment involves qualifying the potential environmental impacts of the inventory analysis results. (4) The interpretation of the results from the previous phases of the study in relation to the objective of the study. This interpretation can be in form of conclusions and recommendations to decision-makers for process changes to deliver improvement in the environmentel performance.
