The processing of thermoplastics usually involves the use of horizontal injection molding machines (see Figure 2-2). Because the parting plane between the mold halves is arranged vertically, the completed articles can drop into a container, once they are released from the mold.

There are many designs of special injection molding machines. The need for insert molding has led to the development of a shuttle table machine. This is a vertical machine with one core plate attached to the movable platen. Two identical cavities are mounted on the shuttle table. While one set of cavities is molding, the empty mold is loaded with inserts. When the first molding cycle is completed, the mold slides out and the second mold slides under the force and the first cycle molded part is removed and loaded with inserts. 

Blends of PCTG with PC or SMA show good clarity, good impact and chemical resistance and excellent forming characteristics. The material is formed by injection molding and extrusion and is used for business machines and appliance parts, vertical body panels for cars, trays and tote bins, lawn equipment housings.

Normally, the injection blow molding machines use the horizontal rotary transfer table (Gussoni Method) as Wheaton, Jomar, Bekum, Fischer, and Johnson Controls. Battenfeld Fischer also produced a vertical rotary... 

All the injection blow molding machines sold today use a horizontal recriposcrew plastifier for injection molding the preform except Jomar, though Jomar has now offered a horizontal recriposcrew, a deviation from their vertical screw design. 

The use of multinozzle injection machines. In general, this type of machine has a horizontal reciprocating screw that feeds four injection nozzles each connected to a single cavity mold thus minimizing waste. However, one concern with this approach is the need to have the mold accurately lined up (the top and bottom surfaces of the mold will be in the vertical plane) to eliminate compound leakage at the nozzle/mold interface.
