Inhomogeneously broadened

In electron-spin-echo-detected EPR spectroscopy, spectral infomiation may, in principle, be obtained from a Fourier transfomiation of the second half of the echo shape, since it represents the FID of the refocused magnetizations, however, now recorded with much reduced deadtime problems. For the inhomogeneously broadened EPR lines considered here, however, the FID and therefore also the spin echo, show little structure. For this reason, the amplitude of tire echo is used as the main source of infomiation in ESE experiments. Recording the intensity of the two-pulse or tliree-pulse echo amplitude as a function of the external magnetic field defines electron-spm-echo- (ESE-)...

The role of disorder in the photophysics of conjugated polymers has been extensively described by the work carried out in Marburg by H. Bassler and coworkers. Based on ultrafast photoluminescence (PL) (15], field-induced luminescence quenching [16J and site-selective PL excitation [17], a model for excited state thermalizalion was proposed, which considers interchain exciton migration within the inhomogenously broadened density of states. We will base part of the interpretation of our results in m-LPPP on this model, which will be discussed in some detail in Sections 8.4 and 8.6. 

However, its qualitative difference from the spectrum obtained in the col-lisional model is that it is inhomogeneously broadened and its structure may be observed in a nonlinear optical experiment. 

Two line narrowing techniques, matrix isolation and resonant laser excitation, are being used separately and in combination to eliminate inhomogeneous broadening (94). Microenvironmental inhomogeneities are reduced by freezing the sample into uniform site locations in isolation or Shpol skii matrices (95). In many cases, the actual width of a Mossbauer line has strong contributions from inhomogeneous broadening due to the distribution of unresolved hyperfine splitting in the source or absorber. Often a Gaussian distribution of Lorentzians,... 

It is difficult to give an exact limit because the impact of thickness broadening depends on the intrinsic width of experimental lines [31], which often exceeds the natural width 2r at by 0.05—0.1 mm s for Fe as studied in inorganic chemistry. This inhomogeneous broadening, which is due to heterogeneity and strain in the sample, causes a reduction of the effective thickness. Rancourt et ai. have treated this feature in detail for iron minerals [32]. 

If inhomogeneous broadening of the EPR linewidth is primarily due to unresolved hyperfine couplings (hfc), at higher frequencies the g-an iso (ropy will dominate over the hyperfine interactions, i.e., the condition (Ag/gIS0H0) > AHhk must be fulfilled.
