Inherent throughput

The feed properties of different profiles depend on the type of product being transported. Once the throughput per revolution is so high that the affected screw element is filled completely, the inherent throughput of the screw element is reached. If the screw element is run with a throughput that is greater than its inherent throughput, a pressure drop establishes across the screw element. This operating condition is described as overrun . 

The optimization of empirical correlations developed from the ASPEN-PLUS model yielded operating conditions which reduced the steam-to-slurry ratio by 33%, increased throughput by 20% while maintaining the solvent residual at the desired level. While very successful in this industrial application the approach is not without shortcomings. The main disadvantage is the inherent assumption that the data are normally distributed, which may or may not be valid. However, previous experience had shown the efficacy of the assumption in other similar situations. 

Off-line SFE is inherently simpler for the novice to perform, since only the SFE (and analyte collection) step needs to be understood. In off-line SFE further cleanup or a pretreatment step can be employed to eliminate interferences. With off-line SFE, sensitivities are limited by the fact that only about 1 p,L of the collection solvent is generally injected into the GC. The daily sample throughput can be higher using offline SFE, since SFE-GC requires that the GC be used for a sample collection device (rather than performing chromatographic separations) during the SFE extraction, whereas several off-line extracts can be loaded into an autosampler for unattended GC analysis. 

Tandem mass spectrometric methods have demonstrated superb specificity because of their ability to isolate analytes selectively in the presence of endogenous interferences. Attempts to further increase sample throughput led to the idea of using LC/MS/MS without the LC. Traditional chromatographic separations were replaced with flow injection analysis (FLA) or nanoelectrospray infusion techniques. The MS-based columnless methods attracted a lot of attention because of their inherent fast cycle times and no need for LC method development. 

Immobilized catalysts on solid supports inherently have benefits because of their easy separation from the products and the possibility of recycling. They are also expected to be useful for combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput experimentation.
