Inhalants treatment

A young mother is concerned because her 2-month-old daughter has received a diagnosis ofRSV. The infant is receiving inhalation treatments with ribavirin. The mother questions this treatment. Describe how the nurse could explain treatment with ribavirin to the mother. Discuss what possible effects the drug could have on the infant and on the mother. [Pg.127]

Pfizer s Exubera insulin inhalator treatment. It costs more than 2000/year. NICE sees no justification for reimbursing a 3 times higher treatment cost just for the convenience of inhaling rather than injecting the insulin. [Pg.184]

Albuterol and terbutaline are also available in tablet form. One tablet two or three times daily is the usual regimen the principal adverse effects of skeletal muscle tremor, nervousness, and occasional weakness may be reduced by starting the patient on halfstrength tablets for the first 2 weeks of therapy. This route of administration presents no advantage over inhaled treatment and is thus rarely prescribed. [Pg.432]

A special problem caused by inhaled corticosteroids is the occurrence of oropharyngeal candidiasis. The risk of this complication can be reduced by having patients gargle water and spit after each inhaled treatment. Hoarseness can also result from a direct local effect of inhaled corticosteroids on the vocal cords. These agents are remarkably free of other short-term complications in adults but may increase the risks of osteoporosis and cataracts over the long term. In children, inhaled corticosteroid therapy has been shown to slow the rate of growth, but this effect appears to be transient Asthma itself delays puberty, and there is no evidence that inhaled corticosteroid therapy in childhood influences adult height. [Pg.436]

Other examples of twin drugs are the antioxidant probucol, which lowers the cholesterol level in blood, and cromolyn, a chromone heterocycle, which is useful in the inhalational treatment of bronchial asthma (Fig. 1.11). [Pg.10]

Since that time, a significant number of variations on that theme have been placed into clinical trials and, in some cases, such as Aztreonam 28, into commerce. Recently (late 2007, early 2008), this compound was submitted for approval in the EU and the USA as the lysinate salt for the inhalation treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis under an Orphan drug category. As of late 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was requiring further information and the status of the EU application was not yet known. [Pg.13]

For inhalation treatment of respiratory diseases, a pharmaceutical DNase I aerosol is on the market. Pulmozyme is a sterile solution for respiratory use at a concentration of 1000 Genentech Units/mL [22]. It contains 1 mg/mL rhDNase, sodium chloride as a tonicity modifier, calcium chloride as a stabilizer, and water for injection. Since deamidation is rapid at high pH and aggregation occurs at low pH, a nearly neutral solution (pH 6.3) is required. It is administered by means of a compressed air-driven nebulizer. Each 2.5-mL single-unit ampule will deliver 2.5 mg of rhDNase to the nebulizer chamber. The efficacy of DNase inhalation therapy largely depends on the aerosol quality and characteristics, which determine the respirable fraction. Significant differences were found between the different aerosol drug-delivery systems [68,81]. [Pg.297]

Azelastine is an ophthalmic antihistaminic preparation. It is indicated in the treatment of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, such as rhinorrhea, sneezing, and nasal pruritus treatment of symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis, such as rhin-orrhea, nasal congestion, and postnasal drip (nasal inhalation) treatment of itching of eye associated with allergic conjunctivitis (ophthalmic). [Pg.96]

Despite the above limitations, the therapeutic promise of liposomes as a drug delivery system is becoming a reality in the following applications (1) Parenteral administration (2) inhalation treatment (3) percutaneous administration (4) oph-thalmics (5) cancer treatment and (6) controlled-release formulations. [Pg.490]

There are quite a number of studies on inhalation treatment of P. carinii pneumonia. They show that pentamidine might be useful for selected patients in addition to oral treatment with antibiotics. Side effects are dependent on aerosol particle size, and the treatment should be targeted toward the alveolar region. [Pg.196]
