The mechanism of bound residue formation is better understood today due to the use of advanced extraction, analytic, and mainly spectroscopic techniques (e.g., electron spin resonance, ESR nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), methods that are applied without changing the chemical nature of the residues. 

The infrared spectroscopy method (IR) is being successfully employed for checking the hardening of phenol-urea-melamine-formaldehyde resins and materials derived from them. 

Yaroslavsky and Terenin (Leningrad State University) (148), by using an infrared spectroscopy method, proved for the first time (1949) the existence of hydroxyl groups on the silica surface (porous glass). This fact was soon confirmed by other researchers (149-153). 

Water is usually involved as reaction media for chemical modification of starch being an environmentally-friendly solvent ( green solvent ), even its use means a relatively low reactivity, or a reduced selectivity due to side reactions. As result of the chemical modification reactions, the crosslinking process of starch occurred, this way being an efficient approach to improve the performance of starch for different applications [57, 58]. Chemically modified starches were investigated by determination of the modification degree [55], and by infrared spectroscopy method [59,60]. 

The anionic interaction according to the reaction (17) was confiitned by means of the infrared spectroscopy method [19]. The IR spectra of KBF4 and that of the quenched molten KCI-KBF4 (1 1 mole ratio) mixture are shown in Fig. 17.
