Information sharing manufacturing

Recycling Technical Assistance Partnership National Network A national information-sharing resource designed to help businesses and manufacturers increase their use of recovered materials. 

When one draws a boundary around the system the general intention is to perform a safety analysis on the contents. Normally that would involve a deep investigation of the technology, its design, build and test and processes and procedures that have gone into its manufacture. However, in some cases, that information is simply not available to the party undertaking the analysis. There are a number of reasons for this but often it comes down to a lack of information sharing and the protection of intellectual property. 

But DCS system has its inherent shortcomings, mainly DCS systems of different manufacturers with different communication modes, resulting in between DCS and DCS, DCS from different manufacturers and the Intranet/Internet network are difficult to realize network interconnection and information sharing, therefore, from this perspective, DCS system is not open (Li Z.J. 2006). 

Three important characteristics are (1) the timing of data received by manufacturer and retailer, (2) the extent of information shared, and (3) the timing of decisions. The capacity decision is made by the manufacturer and the orders are placed by the retailer.

Mishra et al. (2001) discuss the benefits related to information sharing in a supply chain, where prices are key decision variables (both the manufacturer and the retailer set prices based on their forecasts of an unknown demand). Demand is a linear function of retail price. They analyze a make-to-order setting, in which the production takes place after realizing the demand, and a make-to-stock setting, in which the production is completed before realizing the demand. In both settings prices are set prior to demand realization. The paper analyzes how prices are set and forecasts are shared in this complex environment.

Business process complexity describes the complexity of business operations, such as the manufacturing of products. Highly complex products require a high level of information sharing as opposed to standardized products.

PC Manufacturing Inc. tries to focus on satisfying aU customer and supplier needs. However, it is of utmost importance to put an emphasis on the level of information sharing according to the importance of each individual customer and supplier, in order to distribute the given resources in the most efficient manner.

Depending on the nature of the gaps, corrective actions should either be selected for each one individually or jointly. PC Manufacturing Inc. decided to pursue the goal of improving the level of information sharing between its supply chain partners. If possible, however, actions should be found which can have a supporting effect on the supply chain orientation as well. 

In the next step, PC Manufacturing Inc. had to choose the most promising ones from the identified 17 actions. As mentioned before, they mainly focused on the information sharing gap. They used the short questionnaire introduced in Sect. 11.5, which is presented in Fig. 11.8. 

PC Manufacturing Inc. has identified information sharing as the most important gap within the analysis. This concerns mainly the suppliers of leverage as well as bottleneck items which need to have a higher level of information sharing.
