Infinity earths

The space environment, seen as beginning in the center of the earth, extends to infinity. In the past few decades outer space has been penetrated. These initial successful steps depended on a number of factors, one of which was the use of plastics. As in terrestrial uses, plastics have their place in space. [Pg.108]

Theoretically, since these are layered homologous compounds, a numer-ous/infinite number of compounds are possible in the family However, realistically, we have been able to synthesize pure phases of only the three compounds. Compounds which contained more than four layers of the B12 icosahedral and C-B-C chain layers (which is the case for RB28.5C4) always contained a mixture of other number layers also. In the limit of the boron icosahedra and C-B-C chain layers separating the metal layers reaching infinity (i.e. no rare earth layers) the compound is actually analogous to boron carbide. In the opposite limit, a compound with just one boron icosahedra layer is imaginable. And in actuality, such a MgB9N compound was independently discovered by Mironov et al. (2002). As noted in Section 9, the structures of the R-B-C(N) compounds (Figure 21) are homologous to that of boron carbide which exhibits typical p-type characteristics. Boron carbide is the limit where the number of boron icosahedra and C-B-C chain layers separating the metal layers reaches infinity (i.e. no rare earth layers). It has been speculated that the 2 dimensional metal layers of these rare earth R-B-C(N) compounds are playing a role for the unusual n-type behavior, but the mechanism is not yet clear. [Pg.166]

In Figure 2, the ELF curves for some selected atoms are depicted. Here, one can use the spherical symmetry to plot it as a function of only one variable, the distance to the nuclei. It is interesting to note that for the alkaline metal atoms the ELF does not decay to zero when the distance goes to infinity. The same fact occurs for the alkaline-earth-metal atoms and for any spherical system with an outer shell formed only by electrons on s-orbitals. In fact, for the hydrogen atom, the ELF is equal to one everywhere. On the other side, one can perfectly see the shell structure even for mbidium atom. In this chapter, I focus on the concept of Infinity Worlds hypothetical Earths with infinite extent. For example, consider the geography of the Earth today, except that the map is infinitely repeated in the north and south directions (Figure 4.3). On Infinity World one could fly north in a plane from Greenland and arrive at the South America of the adjacent map. [Pg.27]

I also asked colleagues how their answers would be different if Infinity World were created by repeating today s world map along a vertical line in the Atlantic or Pacific ocean. (In these scenarios the world would be infinitely repeated horizontally rather than vertically.) If they thought it useful, respondents were told they could think of a repetitious map on a extremely wide cylinder or sphere. Scientists were asked to ignore the fact that gravity would flatten humans in a superwide Earth. [Pg.27]

The profound effects of an infinitely repetitious world are not entirely clear. Would wars be infrequent because territorial acquisition is unimportant in an infinite world Would humanity s awesome sense of wonder in Infinity World decrease the occurrence of wars In my opinion, wars would be just as frequent. Wars were quite common when our Earth was largely unexplored and the Earth had unlimited territory. Ancient civilizations were often at war. [Pg.29]

On Infinity World, disaffected persons can leave their world and go to a new place. This is not possible on our limited Earth at this time, and this absence of a safety valve permitting exodus causes stagnation and societal stratification. (Consider European stagnation and persecution before the New World was discovered and accessible.)... [Pg.30]

Chaos theory, which suggests that imperceptibly small differences are amplified through time, may have no effect on Infinity World if all sub-Earths have truly identical starting points, McLean suggests we allow some uncertainty to exist in our starting points. Perhaps we will let electron positions be random, and then chaos will eventually diversify our sub-Earths. [Pg.30]
