In Astronomy. For detection of nebulae and stars otherwise invisible because of astronomic.tl haze or because their radiation lies chiefly in the infrared in infiared spectroscopy, for the determination of the composition, the temperature, and the movement of stars and nebulae.

The thermal decomposition of 2-azidoacetic acid (N3CH2CO2H) in the vapour phase has been shown, by photoelectron and matrix isolation infiared spectroscopy, to involve simultaneous formation of CO2 and methanimine (CH2NH) with concerted ejection of N2. It may be estimated that the surface chains in tunicin microfibrils constitute no more than 5% of the total number of tunicin chains, whereas surface chains may constitute 70% of the total number in parenchyma microfibrils. The result of increasing number of surface chains and decrease in whisker diameter can also be evidenced by infiared spectroscopy, with a broadening of tire absorption bands and loss of resolution. In the early years of homogeneous catalysis, it was thought that in-situ spectroscopy (IR, NMR, ESR, Raman, etc.) would make a major contribution to the understanding of catalysis. However, experience has shown that this expectation has only partially been fulfilled. Infiared spectroscopy has proved useful in studying carbonyl complexes [5]. 

Li and coworkers [50] studied the zinc hydroxide carbonate precursor, Zii4C03(0H)6-H20, synthesized from zinc sulfate using ammonium carbonate as a precipitating agent. Infiared spectroscopy and H-NMR have been used occasionally to identify and to quantify residual solvents, but their sensitivity is rather limited if compared with GC. On the other hand specificity is not always assured. The solvent should display signals well separated from those arising from the product, which is not always the case.
