Ineffective treatment

Antihistamines. Some clinicians have prescribed the antihistamine, hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax) to treat anxiety. A typical regimen is 25 mg administered one to three times per day as needed for anxiety. The use of hydroxyzine to treat anxiety is largely driven by concern regarding the addictive potential of benzodiazepines. In reality, hydroxyzine does little to relieve anxiety other than produce drowsiness. Because other nonaddictive anxiolytics are available, we do not recommend routine use of this largely ineffective treatment. [Pg.135]

Short-acting neutral buffered insulin by pump is sometimes ineffective. Treatment with non-buffered insulin can make things worse, but short-acting acidified insulin can improve HbAic. This type of insulin is well tolerated for over 3 years. The acid insulin may contain more monomers than neutral insulin, which may act less rapidly, as it contains more polymers (249). [Pg.409]

Peripheral iridectomy is an ineffective treatment due to the secondary nature of choroidal effusions and inflammation. One case reported rapid resolution of the attack with methylprednisolone added to the intravenous mannitol. [Pg.724]

Otherwise, this can lead to undertreatment or ineffective treatment if not maintained. Sometimes a double dose of an antibiotic is administered as the first dose to quickly achieve a therapeutic level. This is called a loading dose. [Pg.232]

Plague meningitis is seen in 6% to 7% of cases. The condition manifests itself most often in children after 9 to 14 days of ineffective treatment. Symptoms are similar to those of other forms of acute bacterial meningitis.60... [Pg.494]

It has been internationally recognised that children are at risk when they are administered unsuitable medicines. In many cases, the only medicines available have not been clinically tested for safety, efficacy and quality in relation to the age group for which they are used. Problems resulting from a lack of suitably adapted medicines for children include inaccurate dosing, increased risk of adverse reactions (including death), ineffective treatment (under-dosing), unavailability to children of therapeutic advances (modified-release forms) and extemporaneous formulations for children that may exhibit poor or inconsistent bioavailability, low quality and low safety. [Pg.43]

Hair Alopecia has been reported after ineffective treatment of Bowen s disease using red light 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy in two cases [59 ]. [Pg.262]

In a retrospective study in 43 patients with various forms of status epilepticus after ineffective treatment with benzodiazepines, intravenous levetiracetam was given as a short infusion of 1000 or 2000 mg [211 ]. Status epilepticus was terminated in 19. There were no severe adverse reactions. Among patients aged over 80, somnolence was reported, which could have been due to benzodiazepines, and/or post-seizure twilight state. There were no metabolic disturbances or interactions. [Pg.151]
