In membrane extraction, the treated solution and the extractant/solvent are separated from each other by means of a solid or liquid membrane. The technique is applied primarily in three areas wastewater treatment (e.g., removal of pollutants or recovery of trace components), biotechnology (e.g., removal of products from fermentation broths or separation of enantiomers), and analytical chemistry (e.g., online monitoring of pollutant concentrations in wastewater). Figure 18a shows schematically an industrial hollow fiber-based pertraction unit for water treatment, according to the TNO technology (263). The unit can be integrated with a him evaporator to enable the release of pollutants in pure form (Figure 18b). [Pg.300]

The measurement of analyte concentration is a critical part of successful bioreactor monitoring. Although strategies exist for measuring the majority of relevant analytes, industrial online bioreactor control is carried out primarily by measurement and control of temperature, pH, d02, CO2, and, in some cases, cell density. This is because the available technology cannot be easily and inexpensively adapted to measure the analyte in an aseptic manner and measurement is not often achieved in real time so that online control is challenging. Biosensors for a variety of applications for... [Pg.947]

The use of analytical instrumentation for continuous online measurement of industrial process streams for real-time information gained popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This information has met various demands, the most notable of which include process control, safety, waste reduction, environmental emission monitoring and control, and product quality assurance. With the application of computers and electronics to analyzer technology in recent decades, online analyzers have become even more sophisticated and widely used. In many instances, the application of online analysis has become a necessity for survival in the face of the economic pressures of globalization in chemical manufacturing. [Pg.3895]

Inspection techniques for the detection and measurement of corrosion range from simple visual examination to nondestructive evaluation. Significant technological advances have been made in the last decade. For example, the combined use of acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonics (UT) can, in principle, allow an entire structure to be inspected and growing defects to be quantified in terms of length and depth. Advanced corrosion monitoring methods have been developed that have both online capabihty and the abihty to detect problems at an early stage. The oil and gas production and petrochemical industries have assumed a... [Pg.372]
