The statement that the title should be descriptive of the matter of a communication seems to be a truism, but insufficient attention appears to be paid to the titles of papers submitted to learned journals. This is particularly true when papers are part of a series—for example, one of a series of papers may be entitled Studies in the Chemistry of X and Y, Part 47. Attempted Synthesis of Y. Suppose X and Y are complex alkaloids often such a paper deals only with the preparation of some complex ring structures—oxaazulenes, perhaps—from which the investigators hope ultimately to synthesize the subject of their main interest. Hence the paper is really about oxaazulenes and not alkaloids X and Y. The repercussions of this on indexing are serious. However, the new keyword in context indexes Chemical Titles) which are compiled by computer from titles of papers and used for awareness in the period between original publications and effective use of chemical and physical abstracts, may alter this. As special keyword indexes are compiled from titles, authors may give more thought to the relation of a title to its paper. 

Several biologically active polypeptides such as levomycin, ac-tinoleukin, and echinomycin have been shown to possess one or more quinoxalinoyl residues.Echinomycin (45) possesses antitumour, antiviral, and antibacterial activities, but its low therapeutic index has precluded any medicinal uses. The structure for echinomycin was deduced from NMR and mass spectral measurements and is a revision of an earlier proposal in which the linking sulfur atoms were incorporated in a dithiapyran ring. Echinomycin has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of RNA by Staphylococcus aureus. ... 

The same technique of the ring-opening polymerization under microwave irradiation conditions was subsequently applied to the synthesis of a library of diblock copoly(2-oxazoline)s in which a total number of 100 (50 + 50) monomer units were incorporated into the polymer chains [36]. As a result, 16 polymers were obtained with narrow polydispersity indexes (PDI < 1.30). The reactions were initiated by methyl tosylate and conducted in acetonitrile solution at 140 °C. After polymerization of the first monomer the reaction vessels were re-transferred to an inert atmosphere of argon, the second monomer was added, and the reaction mixture was again irradiated in a microwave reactor. 

Several reviews on various aspects of oxazole chemistry have been published. Cicchi and co-workers and Gilchrist reviewed synthesis and reactions of oxazoles. Walsh and co-workers " reviewed the biosynthesis of thizazole and oxazole peptides, including microcin B17 1196. Kawase and co-workers reviewed the synthesis of 5-(trifluoromethyl)oxazoles via Dakin-West chemistry. Suga and Ibata reviewed much of their work on [3 - - 2] cycloadditions of 5-alkoxyoxazoles. In addition, Mrozek and co-workers applied the harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) index to live-membered ring heterocycles, including oxazoles. 

This volume opens with two specialized reviews, not restricted to work published in 2013 Recent Developments in the Synthesis of Cyclic Guanidine Alkaloids written by Matthew G. Donahue, and Heterocyclic chemistry a complete toolbox for nanostructured carbon materials written by Luisa Lascialfari, Stefano Fedeli, and Stefano Cicchi. The remaining chapters examine the 2013 literature on the common heterocycles in order of increasing ring size and the heteroatoms present. The Index is not fully comprehensive, however the Contents pages list all the subheadings of the chapters which will assist in accessibility for readers.
