The Sequence Retrieval System (SRS [19]), initially developed at EMBL and the European Bioinformatics Institute, uses an interesting approach by combining the features of data warehouses and federated database systems. SRS is on the one hand heavily indexing locally stored genomic flat file databases and, on the other hand, it allows one to query DBMS on different sites. An example for a federated approach is the Mouse Federated Database of the Comparative Mouse Genomics Centers Consortium (http //www.niehs.nih. gov/cmgcc/dbmouse.htm).

In addition to the global indexes, local indexes provide detailed information on the reactivity [28]. A way of introducing these local indexes [29] is to begin with the energy of a syston as a functional of the electron density p(f) in DFT [2], that is. 

Materials. For holographic information storage, materials are required which alter their index of refraction locally by spotwise illumination with light. Suitable are photorefractive inorganic crystals, eg, LiNbO, BaTiO, LiTaO, and Bq2 i02Q. Also suitable are photorefractive ferroelectric polymers like poly(vinyhdene fluoride-i o-trifluorethylene) (PVDF/TFE). Preferably transparent polymers are used which contain approximately 10% of monomeric material (so-called photopolymers, photothermoplasts). These polymers additionally contain different initiators, photoinitiators, and photosensitizers. 

When exposed to light, the monomeric material in the photopolymers or photothermoplasts polymerizes, thus locally increasing density and index of refraction. A subsequent fixation process polymerizes the monomer throughout the polymer matrix. 

The calculation of localization energies in heteroaromatic systems derived from alternant hydrocarbons has been simplified by Dewar and Maitlis (57JCS2521). This approach has had considerable success the results provide a somewhat empirical index of reactivity. 

Free valences and localization energies have been calculated for a series of pyrazoles (neutral molecules and conjugate acids) for homolytic substitution. In all the compounds the site with the lowest localization energy has the Wghest free valence index. This parallel between the two indices of reactivity is maintained in pyrazole, 1-methylpyrazole and their conjugate acids, but not in 1-phenylpyrazole and its conjugate acid. For the three compounds examined experimentally, (32), (33) and (35) (Section 4.04.2.1.8(ii)), only the predictions for (33) are in agreement with the experimental results. 

Cost Indices The value of money will change because of inflation and deflation. Hence cost data can be accurate only at the time when they are obtained and soon go out of date. Data from cost records of equipment and projects purchased in the past may be converted to present-day values by means of a cost index. The present cost of the item is found by multiplying the historical cost by the ratio of the present cost index divided oy the index applicable at the previous date. Ideally each cost item affected by inflation should be forecast separately. Labor costs, construction costs, raw-materials and energy prices, and product prices all change at different rates. Composite indices are derived by adding weighted fractions of the component indices. Most cost indices represent national averages, and local values may differ considerably.

A second theoretical index, and one for which there appears to be more justification in its application to free-radical reactions, is the atom localization energy. This index is a measure of the energy required to localize one electron of the 7r-electron system in the aromatic molecule at the point of attack of the radical. The formation of the intermediate adduct in a free-radical aromatic substitution may be regarded as the sum of two processes one, the localization of an electron at the point of attack and the other, the pairing of this...

This decomposition suggests the strategy for parallel computing. In the simplest implementation, we distribute the job over processors, where Nk is the number of K values in our problem. Each processor is labeled by an index, k = 0,1,..., Nk — 1, associated with a particular value of K. We distribute the wave packet vector, v, over the processors such that processor k contains v( , k) and is responsible for everything related to its propagation, in particular, for computing the action of on v( , fe). Except for the work associated with the Coriolis terms, all of the computation is done locally on each processor, proceeds independently, and involves no communication.
