INDEX introduction

It is the custom of CA to publish an Introduction to its Subject Indexes. The indexes are built to stand on their own feet. The introduction is not essential to the ready and effective use of the CA Subject Index. Nevertheless, for the best results in the use of any index the user must meet the index maker part way in understanding the indexing problems and nomenclature in particular. Use of the information in our Subject Index Introductions is recommended to the searcher who is doing more than incidental searching. 

Article 30 Because nomenclature is ruled by priority it is very important to know the date of publication of a name as precisely as possible. Por this you need to use stafleu Cowan (Taxonomic Literature ed. 1 and 2) all the time. Unfortunately only books, not Journals are covered in these books. There are a great number of pitfalls the unwary may stumble into. Always leaf through a book for further information on its contents and publication date. There May be printer s marks with dates, the last page may have an official, dated imprint on the back-side. There may be a date in the introduction, presumably the book appeared more or less shortly after that, anyway most probably not before. However, a common thing in older works is that they appeared in instalmente and that the cover, index, Introduction and last instalment appeared...

The WLN was applied to indexing the Chemical Structure Index (CSI) at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) [13] and the Ituiex Chemicus Registry System (ICRS) as well as the Crossbow System of Imperial Chemical Industries (ICl). With the introduction of connection tables in the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in 1965 and the advent of molecular editors in the 1970s, which directly produced connection tables, the WLN lost its importance. 

Antiwear premium hydrauHc fluids represent the largest volume of hydrauHc fluids used. Hplc techniques are used to routinely separate and quantify less volatile compounds. The hplc columns used to affect this separation are selected based on the constituents of interest. They are typically reverse phase or anion exchange in nature. The constituents routinely assayed in this type of analysis are those high in molecular weight or low in volatility. Specific compounds of interest include wood sugars, vanillin, and tannin complexes. The most common types of hplc detectors employed in the analysis of distilled spirits are the refractive index detector and the ultraviolet detector. Additionally, the recent introduction of the photodiode array detector is making a significant impact in the analysis of distilled spirits. 

Uracil is used more effectively, in nucleic acid synthesis within a rat hepatoma than in normal liver. This observation appears to have stimulated the synthesis of 5-fluorouracil (1027) as an antimetabolite mainly because the introduction of a fluorine atom involves a minimal increase in size. In the event, 5-fluorouracil did prove to have antineoplastic activity and it is now a valuable drug for treatment of tumors of the breast, colon or rectum, and to a lesser extent, gastric, hepatic, pancreatic, uterine, ovarian and bladder carcinomas. As with other drugs which interfere with DNA synthesis, the therapeutic index is quite low and great care is required during treatment (69MI21301).

No references to the original literature are given in the text. This is because the introduction of such references would have considerably increased the size and therefore the price of the book. However, a discussion on the literature of analytical chemistry is given in the Appendix. With the aid of the various volumes mentioned therein — which should be available in all libraries of analytical chemistry — and the Collective Indexes of Chemical Abstracts or of British Chemical Abstracts, little difficulty will, in general, be experienced in finding the original sources of most of the determinations described in the book.
