We have devdoped a novd processable third-ordo NIO polymo , PSTF, in whidi tris-azo-dye NLO-phore was incorporated into die main chain of apdyurediane with a fluorinated alkyl badtb. Fluorinafed alkyl units were used to reduce the polymo wav uide loss. The dienncal structure of PSTF is shown in Figure 7. Since diiid-orda NLO polymers gmoally have hi ier refractive indioes thm transparent pofymos, the refractive imtet of die NLO polymers should be considmd. We can ply die RIE process for PSTF polymer because the polymer has a moderate refractive index and the cladding material, UV cored fluorinated epoxy resin, has an... [Pg.38]

Both common and systematic names of compounds are used throughout this volume, depending on which the Editor-in-Chief feels is most appropriate. Preparations appear in the alphabetical order of names of the compound or names of the synthetic procedures. The Chemical Abstracts indexing name for each title compound, if it differs from the title name, is given as a subtitle. Because of the major shift to new systematic nomenclature adopted by Chemical Abstracts in 1972, many common names used in the text are immediately followed by the bracketed, new names. Whenever two names are concurrently in use, the carre CChemical Abstracts name is adopted. The prefix n- is deleted from -alkanes and w-alkyls. All reported dimensions are now expressed in S st me International units. [Pg.126]

Thus, an estimation can be made of the hydrophilicity of the crown ring. The acetal-type crown ring obtained from hexaethyl-ene glycol and a higher aliphatic aldehyde is estimated to be e-quivalent to about four OE units in an alkyl POE monoether, from our study of the cloud point (11). Moroi et al. concluded, from a comparison of the cmc, that a diaza-18-crown-6 is equivalent to 20 OE units in the usual type of nonionic (12). Okahara s group evaluated the effective HLB based on the cloud point, phenol index and phase-inversion-temperature in emulsion of oil/water system and they concluded that 18-crown-6 and monoaza-18-crown-6 rings with dodecyl group are approximately equivalent to 4.0 and 4.5 units, respectively, of OE chains with the same alkyl chain (17). [Pg.33]

HPLC units have been interfaced with a wide range of detection techniques (e.g. spectrophotometry, fluorimetry, refractive index measurement, voltammetry and conductance) but most of them only provide elution rate information. As with other forms of chromatography, for component identification, the retention parameters have to be compared with the behaviour of known chemical species. For organo-metallic species element-specific detectors (such as spectrometers which measure atomic absorption, atomic emission and atomic fluorescence) have proved quite useful. The state-of-the-art HPLC detection system is an inductively coupled plasma/MS unit. HPLC applications (in speciation studies) include determination of metal alkyls and aryls in oils, separation of soluble species of higher molecular weight, and separation of As111, Asv, mono-, di- and trimethyl arsonic acids. There are also procedures for separating mixtures of oxyanions of N, S or P. [Pg.18]

By controlling the hydrophobic/hydrophilic equilibrium of the polymers, their selectivity for bacterial cells over red blood cells (RBC) can be improved. This property is related to the effect that the ionic nature and hydrophobic character of these polymers has on cell membrane activity. The length of the alkyl substituents in the polymer repeat units affects antibacterial effectiveness in more hydrophobic polymers (hexyl and higher alkyl chain lengths in the repeat unit), disruption of the membrane integrity occurs more effectively. ROMP is an attractive method of synthesis which is widely used to prepare well-defined polymers with controlled MW and low polydispersity index values (PDl) [27-30]. [Pg.213]

Polar copolymers of ethylene, such as ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and ethylene-ethyl acrylate (EEA), are readily crosslinked upon exposure to high energy irradiation [88]. In fact, the melt index of EVA can be controlled by the use of low doses (<50 kGy) of irradiation [89]. The presence in polar ethylene copolymers of comonomer units such as vinyl acetate or alkyl acrylates (methyl, ethyl and n-butyl) proportionately reduces the level of crystallinity, and since the majority of radiation responses of interest take place in the amorphous phase, the responses are more uniform throughout the polymer mass. When the irradiation is done at room temperature, the physical properties after irradiation follow the same trend as polyethylene [90]. [Pg.874]

From these data it is easy to conclude that Rls of both aldehydes and ketones exceed these parameters for n-alkanes with the same number of carbon atoms only at 176 5 retention index units (i.u.) on standard non-polar phases. This small ARI value indicates that these compounds belong to the group of only slightly polar chemicals. At the same time, the average difference of Rls of carbonyl compounds on standard polar polyethylene glycols and non-polar polydimethyl siloxanes is 293 15 (aldehydes) and 282 39 (ketones), which is only slightly more than, for example, the corresponding ARI value for alkyl-substituted arenes (246 30) (they are not classified as polar compounds). [Pg.310]
