Incoming orientation

During preassembly analysis, the direction of each bond is noted as explained earlier (see section on Recording Incoming Orientations). 

At the end of a cleanup, the molecule is rotated back to its incoming orientation (PMM, RMBA).

The aromatic nucleus of alkylphenols can undergo a variety of aromatic electrophiUc substitutions. Electron density from the hydroxyl group is fed iato the ring. Besides activating the aromatic nucleus, the hydroxyl group controls the orientation of the incoming electrophile. 

A quantitative scale of reactivity for aromatic substrates (fused, heterocyclic, and substituted rings) has been devised, based on the hard-soft concept (p. 338). From MO theory, a quantity, called activation hardness, can be calculated for each position of an aromatic ring. The smaller the activation hardness, the faster the attack at that position hence the treatment predicts the most likely orientations for incoming groups. 

Channelling. When the incoming beam is aligned with any low-index axis or plane in a crystal it can be channelled, so that the probe atoms are steered down the channels. Under these conditions the backscattering yield will decrease to a few percent of its original non-oriented value (the random yield ).
