Inclined grate

The objective of Lamb et al s experimental work [4] was to obtain measurement data on burning rates (conversion rates) of a simulated crosscurrent moving bed. The experimental data would be applied to the combustion process in an inclined grate furnace. 

Inclined-grate designs can also handle green fuels, should be able to handle a variety of fuels, allow more complete combustion of the fuel, and have demonstrated high reliability while in service. Inclined-grate systems in existence operate with a much higher steam quality (900-1400, psia. 900 F), and appropriate sizes are available from a number of manufacturers. Unless sulfur in the fuel feedstock is of major concern, inclined grates appear to be a better choice of boiler systems. The improved capabilities of this equipment over equipment previously available should increase overall conversion efficiency some 5 or 10%. 

In practice it has proved advantageous to provide the front part of the cooler with an inclined grate. Its slope should preferably not exceed 3 degrees, however, so as to avoid any risk of uncontrolled rushing down of the clinker on it. 

This type of cooler is used mainly for clinker throughputs of 2500t/day and upwards. It comprises and inclined grate, a short horizontal grate, an interposed clinker breaker, and a long horizontal grate. 

Cylinder cleaners are an Important type of seed-cotton cleaner. They remove small trash (16, 28) and operate by scrubbing seed-cotton against a grid-bar grate (inclined cleaner) or by the interaction of an upper and lower set of cylinders (Impact cleaner). Cylinder cleaners are well described in the Cotton Glnners Handbook (29).

Another initial problem encountered was several grate bars popped out of place, exiting at the end of the inclined floor of the boiler. Engineers determined that the fluctuations in steam load and on/off cycling of the furnace were allowing ash and slag to be wedged in the spaces between bars and to lift the bars out of place.6...
