Incineration continued system

The authors had already conducted the laboratory scale study and the preliminary pilot plant study, and proposed that "drying-pyrolysis process" (pyrolysis followed by indirect steam drying of dewatered sludge cake) (Fig,-i) could be one of the most economical and feasible alternatives for conventional incineration process. The authors have further conducted the feasibility study on a continuous system of "drying-pyrolysis process to evaluate the performance of the process in pilot scale, and to demonstrate its effectiveness as a thermal processing of sewage sludge. This paper presents the results of this pilot plant study. [Pg.488]

Complete dissolution of plutonium residues, especially high temperature calcined plutonium dioxide contained in residues such as incinerator ash, continues to cause problems, despite continued research since the Manhattan Project (9). Methods to improve the Rocky Flats system include the use of additives (e.g., cerium) and electrochemistry, other solvents (HCl-SnCl2) as well as high-temperature fusion methods (10). High pressure dissolution, HF preleaching, fluorination, and other methods are being investigated. [Pg.372]

The specific equipment used for each step depends on the incinerator type and the physical and chemical characteristics of the wastes the incinerator is designed to bum. Wastes are fed into the incinerator in batches or in a continuous stream. Liquid wastes are often pumped and atomized into fine droplets that bum more easily. Solid wastes may be fed into the incinerator in bulk or in containers using a conveyer, a gravity system, or a ram feeder.8... [Pg.956]

The transportable vitrification system (TVS) is a large-scale, fully integrated ex sim vitrification system that treats low-level and mixed wastes in the form of sludges, soils, incinerator ash, and many other waste streams. The unit is designed to be transportable and easily decontaminated. Slurried or dry feed is mixed with glass formers, and the glass product is continuously poured into steel containers that are cooled, stored, and eventually disposed in low-level radioactive burial facilities. [Pg.1134]

Now I think that it is not irrelevant to note here that in this project the water heating system for the showers was connected to the garbage incinerator and not to the crematorium oven, as for example in the five-muffle oven of the Lublin KL. In my opinion, the reason for that decision was the fact that the crematorium ovens did not ensure a continuity of use to be able to provide sufficient hot water throughout the entire day in other words, the crematorium ovens were not used enough to ensure efficient operation of the water heating system. [Pg.99]

The larger concern about nitro-aromatic compounds is that environmental exposure to these molecules can cause cancer in humans and in other living organisms. Nitro-aromatic compounds are acutely toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic in laboratory mammals and in vitro test systems [6, 8]. Despite the potential negative impact of nitro-aromatic compounds on human health, they continue to be emitted into ambient air from municipal incinerators [9], motor vehicles (particularly from diesel exhausts) [10, 11], industrial power plants [12], and other sources. Evidence... [Pg.218]
