Improvements on Standard Methods

Both the explicit and implicit methods already described have been improved to greater accuracy and, hopefully, greater efficiency.

Specific targeting of radioisotopes or toxic drugs to tumors for cancer detection and treatment is an enticing but elusive goal. It has proved difficult to achieve adequate concentration ratios between tumor and normal tissues to improve on standard diagnostic and therapeutic methods. 

The American Chemical Society s Committee on Environmental Improvement defines standardization as the process of determining the relationship between the measured signal and the amount of analyte. A method is considered standardized when the value of k in equation 5.1 or 5.2 is known. 

Currently, there is continuing work on an iadustry standard method for the direct determination of monomer, dimer, and trimer acids. Urea adduction (of the methyl esters) has been suggested as a means of determining monomer ia distilled dimer (74). The method is tedious and the nonadductiag branched-chain monomer is recovered with the polymeric fraction. A micro sublimation procedure was developed as an improvement on urea adduction for estimation of the polymer fraction. Incomplete removal of monomer esters or loss of dimer duriag distillation can lead to error (75). 

Statistical process control (SPC) is an important on-line method in real time by which a production process can be monitored and control plans can be initiated to keep quality standards within acceptable limits. Statistical quality control (SQC) provides off-line analysis of the big picture such as what was the impact of previous improvements. It is important to understand how SPC and SQC operate.

The improvements to the first three steps of scheme 1 were accomplished using GC as a major analytical tool. A capillary GC internal standard method, described above, was used to monitor the first three steps of scheme 1. Figure 10 is a typical chromatogram of the internal standard method for step 1 of scheme 1. To follow a reaction, a known amount of internal standard was added to the reaction vessel. Aliquots were withdrawn at intervals and analyzed on GC. A graph of yield vs. reaction time was prepared to determine the optimum time for completion of the reaction. 

Fluorouracil-based chemotherapy is the standard of care for the adjuvant treatment of colorectal cancer either as a single agent or, more commonly, in combination with other agents. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) alone results in a small improvement in survival that can vary based on the method of 5-FU administration. Studies suggest that protracted or continuous intravenous (IV) 5-FU infusion treatment schedules are more effective than bolus therapy.20... 

Silva et al. (2007) characterized a municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) based on standardized European Methods (ECN) for soil improvers and growing media and found that MSWC presents a lower C/N ratio (15) than peat and composted pine bark.

The conference endorsed the goals of the pharmacopeias to improve and harmonize standards for existing excipients, to focus on testing methods, and address specifications after test methods had been agreed upon, and to develop functionality tests, including particle size, siuface area, and density.
