High Speed Fluid Energy Mills. This type of equipment is used primarily for preparation of relatively low viscosity mill bases for inks and paints. The first is an impeller type which achieves dispersion by the appHcation of shear. The second type is in the form of a rotor—stator, and the dispersion is achieved by impingement or impact. [Pg.512]

In the Premier Mill the rotor is shaped hke the frustrum of a cone, similar to that in Fig. 20-53. Surfaces are smooth, and adjustment of the clearance can be made from 25 [Lm (0.001 in) upward. A small impeller helps to feed material into the rotor gap. The mill is jacketed for temperature control. Direct-connected hquid-type mills are available with 15- to 38-cm (6- to 15-in) rotors. These mills operate at 3600 r/min at capacities up to 2 mVh (500 gal/h). They are powered with up to 28 kW (40 hp). Working parts are made of Invar alloy, which does not expand enough to change the grinding gap if heating occurs. The rotor is faced with Stellite or silicon carbide tor wear resistance. For pilot-plant operations, the Premier Mill is available with 7.5- and 10-cm (3- and 4-in) rotors. These mills are belt-driven and operate at 7200 to 17,000 r/min with capacities of 0,02 to 2 mVh (5 to 50 gal/h). [Pg.1864]

Today, the eapaeity of Western Mining s smelter exeeeds halfmillion tons annually and may reaeh up to 750,000 tpy with the addition of a fourth booster stage and aneillary equipment. Engineers at the smelter find the turbomaehinery availability and reliability are satisfaetory. Effieieney values of up to 91% are observed with the turboexpander models in use at dais loeation. This partieular model range offers five eomputer-generated geometries to meet the most speeifie applieation requirements, in either open or elosed designs. Impellers are east or milled to withstand erosion. [Pg.448]

Centrifugal-eompressor impellers are either shrouded or unshrouded. Open, shrouded impellers that are mainly used in single-stage applieations are made by investment easting teehniques or by three-dimensional milling. Sueh impellers are used, in most eases, for the high-pressure-ratio stages. The shrouded impeller is eommonly used in the proeess eompressor beeause... [Pg.269]

Impeller construction for the cover-disk style impeller historically has been by built-up construction and welding. The traditional method uses die formed blades (see Figure 5-34). More recently, with the increased use of 5-axis milling, blades have been milled integrally with the hub disk. This alternate construction method is somewhat more costly because of the machining but produces a more accurate and repeatable gas path, which offsets the added expense (see Figure 5-35). Cover disks arc w ddcd to the blades to complete the milled impeller. Physical prop-... [Pg.195]

Impeller types usually used with mixing and listed in decreasing order of high volume ability (hence in increasing order of high head ability or requirement) are paddle, turbine, propeller, sawtooth impeller or propeller, cut-out impeller disc (no blades), colloid mill. [Pg.288]

The impellers can be an open-faced (stationary shroud) or closed-face (rotating shroud) design. As long as the tip velocities are below 1000 ft/s, closed-face impellers can be used. The standards allow the impellers to be welded, riveted, milled, or cast. Riveted impellers are unacceptable, especially if the impeller loading is high. Impellers are to be assembled on the shaft with a shrink fit with or without key. Shrink fits should be carefully done because excessive shrink fits can cause a problem known as hysteresis whirl. In compressors where the impellers require their thrust to be balanced, a balance drum is acceptable and preferred. [Pg.71]

Physical Methods Physical methods include mechanical disruption by milling, homogenization, or ultrasonication. Typical high-speed bead mills are composed of a grinding chamber filled with glass or steel beads which are agitated with disks or impellers mounted on a motor-driven shaft. The efficiency of cell disruption in a bead mill depends on the concentration of the cells, the amount and size of beads, and the type and rotation speed of the agitator. The optimum wet solid content for the cell suspension for a bead mill is typically somewhere between 30 percent to 60 percent by volume. The amount of beads in the chamber is 70 percent to 90 percent by... [Pg.266]
