Types of mills

Manufacturers of various types of mills maintain laboratories in which grindability tests are made to determine the suitability of their machines. When grindability comparisons are made on sm equipment of the manufacturers own class, there is a basis for scale-up to commercial equipment. This is better than relying on a grindabihty index obtained in a ball mih to estimate the size and capacity of different types such as hammer or jet mihs. [Pg.1829]

In the second type of mill (Fig. 20-28), a cyhndrical grating is provided beneath the rotor for product discharge. Some hammer crushers are symmetrically designed so that the direction of rotation can be reversed to distribute wear evenly on the hammer and breaker plates. When such a Pennsylvania nonreversible hammermill is used for reduction, material is broken first by impacl against hammers and then by rubbing action (attrition) against screen bars. When the problem is to disrupt Ughtly bonded clusters or agglomerates, a new aspect of fine grinding enters. This may be iUustrated by the breakdown of pigments to incorporate them in liquid vehicles in the making of paints, and the disruption of biological cells to release soluble produces. Purees, food pastes, pulps, and the like are processed by this type of mill. Dispersion is also associated with the formation of emulsions which are basically two-fluid systems. Wood powder is a kind of upgraded fuel that is burned in large-scale combustion plants for heat production. However, it is possible to use wood powder for power generation as well. It is a biofuel made of sawdust, shavings and bark. The raw material is crushed, dried and milled to tine particles in order to obtain the best fuel properties. There are many different wood powder qualities dependant on different physical properties such as particle size distribution, particle shape and also moisture content. The powder is usually handled in a closed system from milling to storing in silos to avoid the risk of dust explosions.
