For widely spaced tubes, the target efficiency Tp, can be calculated from Fig. 17-39 or from the impaction data of Golovin and Putnam [Ind. Eng. Chem. Fundam., 1,264 (1962)]. The efficiency of the overall tube banks for a specific particle size can then be calculated from the equation T = 1 — (1 — la/A) where a is the cross-sectional area of all tubes in one row, A is the total flow area, and n is the number of rows of tubes. [Pg.117]

Classical ion trajectory computer simulations based on the BCA are a series of evaluations of two-body collisions. The parameters involved in each collision are tire type of atoms of the projectile and the target atom, the kinetic energy of the projectile and the impact parameter. The prospect of a patchwork of state standards became a cause of great concern to manufacturers. When President Jimmy Carter was elected, he proposed that mandatoi y standards be set by the Department of Energy (DOE) to replace the voluntary efficiency targets. Wliile opposing mandatory standards at the federal level, manufacturers acquiesced to the National Energy Conservation and Policy Act (NECPA) of 1978, which required DOE to set appliance efficiency standards for residential products. A multitude of semiempirical and semiclassical theories have been developed to calculate electron impact ionization cross sections of atoms and atomic ions, with relatively few for the more complicated case of molecular electron impact ionization cross sections.
