Our best evidence of this is a 3-year follow-up of 402 patients in whom Bence Jones protein had been detected in our laboratory. Dr. Corbett obtained biopsy evidence of malignant immunocytoma in 400. The various forms such malignant immunocytomata can take are listed in Table 7, which also includes the benign varieties in which I personally have not yet found immunoglobulin fragments. 

II. Establishing the level and class of a paraprotein enables a better appreciation of that level, and possible associations. Immunoglobulin fragments (urine should be properly examined for Bence Jones protein IgM for 7S, etc.) and reductions of other immunoglobulins imply a serious prognosis. Follow-up is essential and can indicate the natural history or response and escape on treatment.

Several immunoglobulin fragments have been investigated by X-ray diffraction of their crystals (17-22). These studies have revealed that corresponding immunoglobulin domains generally have very similar structures. An excellent review has been published... 

FRAP was used initially to smdy the dynamics of lateral diffusion of lipids and proteins on cell surfaces [159-163]. It was combined with total internal reflection (Box 3.2 and Sect. 5.10) to study interactions of immunoglobulin fragments with planar bUayer membranes supported on glass surfaces [164] and binding of ligands to immobilized receptors [165]. Its applications expanded rapidly with the development of confocal microscopy (Sect. 5.10) and GFP tags [147,166-168], and now include components of the nucleus [169, 170], mitochonrial matrix [171], endoplasmic reticulum [172], and Golgi apparatus [173].
