Immunogen preparation. The PSP can be divided into two main subgroups those compounds which are related to saxitoxin (STX Figure 1, la-c) and those which are related to neosaxitoxin (NEO Figure 1, Id-f). STX was chosen for these studies predominantly because it is the most readily available of the PSP and because its chemistry has been the most extensively studied of the PSP (for example see 10).

Antibodies to nucleosides usually react with nucleosides equaUy or only slightly better than with nucleotides (Fig. 1). They also react well with polymers in which the bases are accessible, such as denatured DNA. When the periodate oxidation technique (with ring breakage and later reduction) is used for immunogen preparation, the resulting antibodies react slightly better with deoxyribonucleosides than with ribonucleosides.
