Immune system pressures

Physioiogicai There is an extensive literature that deals with the effects ginseng on CNS function, but effects are also seen in neuroendocrine function, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, the immune system, and cardiovascular function (Gillis 1997). Ginsenosides induce a decrease in heart rate and have biphasic effects on blood pressure, with decreases preceded by a slight increase (Kaku et al. 1975). Ginsenoside Rgl had the most potent effects on blood pressure. Little or no effect is observed on respiration. [Pg.186]

Potato magnesium levels range from 142 to 359 p,g/g FW (Casanas et al., 2002 Rivero et al., 2003). Magnesium is required for normal functioning of muscles, heart, and immune system. Magnesium also helps maintain normal blood sugar levels and blood pressure. The RDA for magnesium is 400-600 mg. [Pg.410]

N.A. Astragalus americana Bunge. Asparagine, calcyosm, sterols, formononetin, kumatakenin." Improve immune system, lower blood pressure. [Pg.252]

Melatonin has side effects, but much less so than pharmaceutical sleeping pills. Long-term safety is not known. Prolonged use may have an influence on sex organs and reduce libido. It may slightly lower blood pressure. People with the symptoms of severe mental illness, severe allergies, autoimmune diseases, or immune system cancers such as leukemia should not... [Pg.150]

One of the worst consequences of a bacterial infection is sepsis. Because of the release of bacterial endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides), the immune system acts to produce cytokines, which are only efficient for localized infections. However, in the case of septicemia, the excessive release of cytokines leads to dilatation of blood vessels, causing a drop in blood pressure and insufficient tissue irrigation. Antibodies against endotoxins can be used to minimize this condition. [Pg.400]

Anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, or anaphylactic reaction—a severe, frightening and life-threatening allergic reaction of the immune system occurring in response to an allergen. The symptoms may include heart rhythm and respiration disorders, lowered blood pressure, swelling, hives, and asthma-like symptoms. [Pg.399]

The compositions of paste-like concentrates for drinks are given. The concentrates include ground chips from Jerusalem artichoke. It is claimed they strengthen the immune system, regulate blood sugar content, and normalize blood pressure. [Pg.438]
