Immunomodulators affect the functioning of the immune system. Immune functions may be promoted as well as suppressed by these agents. In this section interferon alpha, BCG, immunocyanin and aldesleukine and the monoclonal antibodies, alem-tuzumab, bevacizumab, cetuximab, trastuzumab, rit-uximab and ibritumomab tiuxetan will be briefly discussed.

For example, a patient with AIDS who is exposed to tuberculosis may develop the disease in spite of receiving a course of postexposure prophylactic antituberculosis chemotherapy, which would be effective in a patient with an intact immune system. Immunity includes both nonspecihc complement-mediated opsonization and specihc antibody- and cell-mediated immunity.

IgA is the principal antibody present in a number of secretions and is the major antibody associated with the external immune system. IgA lacks the effector functions identified previously and acts mainly in immune exclusion (prevention of entry of potentially infectious entities into the body). As noted previously, there are differences in the immune effector mechanisms associated with the internal immune system or systemic immunity and the external immune system or local immunity. Systemic immunity is mediated by IgM and IgG, the latter is the major form of Ig found in the blood. Local immunity is mediated primarily by IgA and IgE. The contribution by the external immune system should not be underestimated because about half of the body s lymphocytes are associated with this system. 

The immune system uses self-tolerance to neutralize, destroy, and eliminate any non-self proteins and cells, including microorganisms. Non-self proteins and cells include self-cells (the body s own cells) that have become infected or debilitated (cancer cells). The immune system recognizes self-cells by unique proteins on the surface of self-cells. Foreign cells have different proteins called antigens that stimulate the immune response by the immune system. Immune system cells originate and mature in bone marrow and release into the blood, where immune system cells search for non-self-cells. 

The diverse class of polypeptides allows for the realization of, on the one hand, high-performance construction materials, such as dragline spider silk, microtubules, or collagen fibers. On the other hand, (multi)functional molecules or molecular assemblies can be found, for example, necessary for biocatalysis (enzymes) or for the function of the immune system (immune globulins). Moreover, proteins participate in the storage and the directed transport of materials in biological systems and are essential components for the communication in complex biosystems in form of, for example, cell-surface markers, receptors, regulators, or hormones. 

The Immune System - Immune adjuvants (L., Fr., adjuvare, to assist) are defined as substances or procedures which aid in the development or manifestations of the immune system. The protection conferred by this system against material foreign to the host (antigens) ranges from microorganisms to tumors, and its complexity is now beginning to be appreciated.
