The nature of O adatoms on noble metals, which frequently form islands on the electrocatalytic surface (Fig. 40), has been studied in detail and imaged by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), by Ertl and coworkers [140], Some of the best binary and tertiary alloy electrocatalysts developed so far for the ORR reaction are compared in Fig. 41 [141]. [Pg.63]

The above historical remarks might convey a subtle and scattered impression. It is true that any direct evidence has not yet been presented in the sense that monocyclicity is proven by rotationally resolved spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, or high-resolution images by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) or transmission electron microscopy (TEM). [Pg.102]

Despite the consistent picture of a controlled protein monolayer formation by molecularly specific "recognition" reactions deduced from the optical data we were still concerned about the limited optical resolution. In order to further enhance the special resolution euid to observe the binding of streptavidin to a functionalized surface (eventually) with molecular resolution we performed atomic force microscopic (AFM) studies at a membrane/solution-interface. In Fig.6 the experimental situation is schematically sketched. Prior to the protein injection a lipid monolayer with coexisting fluid and ordered domains deposited onto a condensed monolayer on the mica substrate has to be imaged by scanning the tip across the membrane surface. It is well-known that a fluid membrane can not stand the load of the tip (even at a reduced force) so that we expect a height contrast between the two areas of about a monolayer thickness... [Pg.524]

By contrast, when a NHS - CIO SAM on gold was used as a substrate in DPN experiments, stable patterns were deposited, as observed in AFM friction images. By scanning an AFM tip inked with G4 PAMAM dendrimers (5.6 X 10 M methanolic solution) over a NHS-CIO SAM, patterns with sub-100 nm line widths could be fabricated via DPN. hi Fig. 17a, a friction force AFM image of lines 2 xm long and 50 20 nm wide is shown in Fig. 17b the fines are 1 (xm long and 70 10 nm wide. [Pg.195]
