It has to be acknowledged that the teaching process was not eqnally efficient in all participating schools, but it appeared that an action research approach did lead to a significant improvement in the teaching process in all the participating schools. This observation is supported by positive feedback from teachers and their declared willingness to continue with the implementation of the LON approach in years to come as illustrated below ... 

The illustrative examples in this paper are taken from ongoing joint research of the author with J. M. Hyman, B. Nicolaenko and J. C. Scovel (for the Kuramoto-Shivashinsky PDE) and with R. E. Ecke (for the Rayleigh-Bdnard experiments). Research on both of these projects is performed under the auspices of the U.S Department of Energy The author would also like to acknowledge many helpful discussions with D. G. Aronson, R. P. McGehee and M. S. Jolly. 

Shortly thereafter, Kuo, Aoyama and Shioiri described essentially the same procedure for the desulphonylation of a-benzylsulphonylacetate esters. They acknowledged their procedure as being due to Tsuchihashi, who had described it previously in conference proceedings and in a Japanese patent. The reactions are structure- and reagent-dependent, as illustrated in equations (47) and (48). Yields ranged from 49 to 78%. The sulphone used in equation (47) also gave some dibenzyl sulphone with sodium and ethanol in THF.
