Optical hysteresis

Crystals with one of the ten polar point-group symmetries (Ci, C2, Cs, C2V, C4, C4V, C3, C3v, C(, Cgv) are called polar crystals. They display spontaneous polarization and form a family of ferroelectric materials. The main properties of ferroelectric materials include relatively high dielectric permittivity, ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition that occurs at a certain temperature called the Curie temperature, piezoelectric effect, pyroelectric effect, nonlinear optic property - the ability to multiply frequencies, ferroelectric hysteresis loop, and electrostrictive, electro-optic and other properties [16, 388],... [Pg.217]

An apparatus for measuring the dynamic modulus and hysteresis of elastomers. The stress-strain oscillogram is shown on a ground-glass screen by means of an optical system. Now superseded by modem computer controlled servo hydraulic and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis machines. Roll Bending... [Pg.54]

An unusually extensive battery of experimental techniques was brought to bear on these comparisons of enantiomers with their racemic mixtures and of diastereomers with each other. A very sensitive Langmuir trough was constructed for the project, with temperature control from 15 to 40°C. In addition to the familiar force/area isotherms, which were used to compare all systems, measurements of surface potentials, surface shear viscosities, and dynamic suface tensions (for hysteresis only) were made on several systems with specially designed apparatus. Several microscopic techniques, epi-fluorescence optical microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and electron microscopy, were applied to films of stearoylserine methyl ester, the most extensively investigated surfactant. [Pg.133]

The spin crossover characteristics of the corresponding Fe(II) compounds may be fine tuned by the systematic variation of the substituent at N-4 of the 1,2,4-triazole ring, as well as by changing the non-coordinated anionic groups. In this way, thermochromic Fe(II) materials showing a spin transition close to room temperature and accompanied by hysteresis have been obtained. As an example, the optical reflectivity measurements record-... [Pg.141]

If kinetic factors due to slow molecular reorganization are important, hysteresis may be observed if a film is alternately compressed and expanded. Figure 13 shows the effect of compressing, expanding, and recompressing a film of optically pure iV-a-methylbenzylstearamide. [Pg.219]

Electrooptic Properties, The electrooptic properties of the PLZT materials are intimately related to their ferroelectric properties. Consequently, varying the ferroelectric polarization with an electric field such as in a hysteresis loop, produces a change in the optical properties of the ceramic. In addition, the magnitude of the observed electrooptic effect is dependent on both the strength and direction of the electric field,... [Pg.272]

His experiments were primarily upon a single soda-lime silicate, which was chosen because it had been studied extensively in the literature and can be made in small amounts with fair optical quality. The decay for this glass with 0.8 per cent Nd203 added is shown in Fig. 33. It is quite clearly not a single exponential. One finds that the slope changes by a factor of three over the range examined and that the curvature increases with neodymium concentration. The measurements made at long times were done with a mechanical shutter that shielded the photomultiplier tube from the initial intense fluorescence. When this was not done, hysteresis in the photomultiplier tube led to spurious results. [Pg.259]

The thus obtained high-density Mn-Zn ferrite was investigated in detail from the view of physical and mechanical properties, that is, the relationships between the composition of metals (a,) ) and <5 the magnetic properties such as temperature and frequency dependence of initial permeability, magnetic hysteresis loss and disaccommodation and the mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity, hardness, strength, and workability. Figures 3.13(a) and (b) show the optical micrographs of the samples prepared by the processes depicted in Fig. 3.12(a) and (b), respectively. The density of the sample shown in Fig. 3.13(a) reached up to 99.8 per cent of the theoretical value, whereas the sample shown in Fig. 3.13(b) which was prepared without a densification process, has many voids. [Pg.217]

Addition of galactomannan to agarose-water systems profoundly alters the optical rotation behavior. Thus, both in the absence and presence of locust-bean gum, there is, below 35°, a sharp shift in optical rotation. However, these shifts are opposite in sign, as shown in Fig. 6. The reheating curves also differ, in that, when locust-bean gum is present, a butterfly-shaped hysteresis curve is obtained.40... [Pg.294]

Zinc increases the rate of dimerization 21, 65, 66) however, Apple-bury and Coleman 48) showed that zinc is not necessary for dimerization to occur. Starting at a high pH and slowly lowering the pH they found that all of the zinc is lost by the time the pH reaches 4.0, yet the molecule though inactive is still dimeric. However, upon increasing the pH of a solution of monomers, the dimer reforms by pH 5.0, yet the zinc does not bind completely until pH 6.0. Also, the optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) spectrum is the same for dimer at pH 8.0 and monomer at pH 4.0, but a spectral change occurs for the monomer at pH 2.0 48, 67). Applebury and Coleman 48) reasoned that there must be a kinetic barrier which prevents any rapid equilibration of the dimer monomer system at intermediate pH values and that the same barrier exists in the hysteresis loop involved in the titration of carboxyl groups on the enzyme 21, 67). [Pg.382]
